That car didn't sacrifice itself for anyone. It fell apart and the driver just got extremely lucky. The tree itself is dead from girdling.

From the pictures, the drivers side looks to be completely intact if not anything else.

I saw a Mercury Sable one time that the exact same thing happened to. He hit a bulldozer that was parked on the side of the highway. He was passing cars on the shoulder and his intent was to cut back in traffic before he got to the bulldozer. Unfortunately, his timing was a little off and he hit the dozer at or above highway speed. The entire right half of the car was torn off and only the roof was intact. What a mess it was.

I've also seen several cars hit by trains and the largest pieces of those cars were the engine block and transmission. Everything else was thrown onto the flatbed by the wrecker drivers and scraped up with a front end loader.

Apparently the body was in just as bad shape, if not worse. Not much more than a greasy spot on the road.

What is more amazing is how indestructible trees are. Cars should be made out of whole trees.

It really is remarkable how trees are so much more resilient than even very strong man-made structures. I imagine a metal pole of similar diameter would likely have sheared off, or at least been badly bent.

I still don't get the RS6 as an Avant...seems wrong.

Whats wrong with wagons? The US seems to be the only country that has such an image problem with an avant. You get what, an additional 30 lbs along with another 40 square footage of storage space as well as better front/rear weight distribution.

Most poles (except ones such as this) are designed to break to avoid too much damage to a runaway vehicle and its occupants.

I just think that if I want a wagon, then I want it for "wagony" things, and I don't need it to be a beast like the RS4. If I want a sports car/sports sedan, I'll get one. Just personal preference, I guess. Of course, I have no children and no pets, so maybe that's why I don't get it.

However, if by some miracle I looked out into the driveway tomorrow morning and my A4 sedan had been magically transformed into an RS4 Avant, I suppose I wouldn't mind.
