Now if Ford, GM, or Dodge announced a 580HP+ car, this thread would already be 100+ pages of:

"...do you really need that much..."
"...causing global warming..."
"...irresponsible to the environment..."
"...raising oil and gas prices..."
"...why don't American auto makers 'get it'..."

They have 😉 ... Viper, Corvette ZR-1, Ford GT (not if you go by bhp)

CTS-V is around the corner with 500+...

Another thing is, IMO no other company (possibly BMW with M5) could pull off such a car quite as well as Audi. Looking at the whole package here...

Yeah but Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc can put out a car that makes 1000 HP and gets 2 MPG and its just so incredible and wonderful and not enough, but an American company puts out a car that makes 400 HP and gets 30 MPG and it's shunned and nobody "neeeeeeds" that much power.

Typical Euro snob double standards.

Never really heard what you're describing. Any half-sane person would be a fool to dismiss a GTO or Vette because it's American...

In fact, I can't recall the last time that has happened... Maybe in your experience, but not mine. Closest thing I can think of is that they call American V8s gas guzzlers when they really aren't compared to their European counterparts. IMO there is so much more to a car than a powertrain, but recent cars (GTO, Z06, G8) are quite difficult to criticize when one considers the performance and quality for the price.

Isn't the GTO Australian?

An Australian division of an American company. Holden = GM.

It's kind of the same thing with electronics... everyone likes to say the world has the US beat in technology and engineering... open up any PC or Sony stereo or Toshiba TV or Panasonic DVD player... You'll find Intel, AMD, Motorola, IBM, Texas Instruments, Burr Brown, Analog Devices, General Electric, etc.... 🙂

I see it a lot... a new SRT4 is announced and it's immediately "an American piece of junk, BMW for the win!". The Viper gets 50 more horsepower and it's "Americans still don't get it" or "what is the point, thats too much" but if a Mercedes uses a 6+ Liter engine to get 400 HP and 10 mpg it's "only 400HP?" and it's hailed as an engineering marvel just because it's Mercedes and expensive.

Just sick of the euro-peon bias I guess.

That's a bit silly. Of course there are some idiots out there, but the truth is :

Neons suck, fast or not
Vipers are awesomeness incarnate
High-end BMW/Mercedes are in a different class than US cars ATM. Also, they have vastly different outputs than you quote. Examples :

BMW M6 : 500HP/383TQ/5.0 V10, 12/19MPG, 8250(!) Redline, truly a formula-inspired motor if there ever was one for the street.

Mercedes SL65 AMG : 604HP/738TQ, 6.0 V12, 13/19MPG, 6000 Redline. Been tested @ 3.9 with the computer assist gizmos turned off. Link

So, a far cry from 6 Liter 400hp 10mpg, no? But I get the point of your exaggeration. There are some people who poop on anything American, and worship anything Euro. But the fact is that great and crap vehicles come forth from both sides of the pond.

nevermind: just checked

the S6 has a N/A 5.2 V10, that makes 435hp, 398tq.

the Lambo Gallardo has a N/A 5.2 V10, that makes 520hp, 376tq

still, i am guessing the blowers can still do more than that...

Stock boost usually isn't that high in many production turbo cars. The first few psi usually only make up for the lowered compression ratio. By the time you lower the compression then add 8 psi boost, you're barely passing over what you gave up with compression loss. They also leave a lot on the table so people don't blow up their cars being cheap asses with 87 octane.

Also turbos are sometimes used for efficiency gains more so than pure performance (smaller engine, less compression resistance and power output at cruising speeds, but still have the power when you need it and allow the turbos to spool).

Of course the best part about that is the headroom; enthusiasts can crank up the boost and make cheap and dirty power. Thats why the Cobra, Supra, SRT4, Skyline, etc are all such bad ass cars. None of them ship with the kind of boost the engines were built for and you'll have a hard time finding one still on stock boost. I'd rather buy a car with 580 HP running 8 psi stock before I buy a car with the same power running 17 psi. It's all about potential for me.

It's all about sizing though, since it's volume that determines power, not pressure. A larger turbo running 8 psi will give you the same power as a smaller one running 17 psi, with the difference being the larger one should give you more headroom, while the smaller one should have better spooling characteristics.
