The folks over at Auto Motor und Sport (and Dubspeed) let loose several images and specs on Audi's forthcoming RS6 Avant, and although the pics are pretty, the real story is the power. Sporting a 5.2-liter V10, complete with TSI and two turbos swinging from the exhaust manifolds, the RS6 will be producing upwards of 580 HP and 480 lb.-ft. of torque. This allows the Avant to jaunt to 60 in under 4.6 seconds and onto an electronically limited top speed of 155 MPH.

The official unveiling is days away in Frankfurt, so expect more to follow.

Audi pens some beautiful cars...

and sure knows how to put some grunt under the hood. The quoted 0-60 time is a joke IMO, this thing has the potential to scoot to 60 in 4 flat IMO. Z0mG CHiP IT!!!!1one

EDIT:

Video released!

It weighs very close to my fullsize truck. 😱

Now if Ford, GM, or Dodge announced a 580HP+ car, this thread would already be 100+ pages of:

"...do you really need that much..."
"...causing global warming..."
"...irresponsible to the environment..."
"...raising oil and gas prices..."
"...why don't American auto makers 'get it'..."

They have 😉 ... Viper, Corvette ZR-1, Ford GT (not if you go by bhp)

CTS-V is around the corner with 500+...

Another thing is, IMO no other company (possibly BMW with M5) could pull off such a car quite as well as Audi. Looking at the whole package here...

I don't think it looks that good honestly. The interior is alright, the headlamps look a bit "meh", its chin looks enormous, and flat fender flares? Doesn't add up to me, I guess I will be one of the people who sits drooling over this generation (new A4, RS6) out.

I would love that engine though, mmmMMMmmmm V10 + turbos!!!

I agree with everything you posted. Aside from engine noise induced goosebumps I'm not a big fan of the current/upcoming Audi lineup

Yeah but Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc can put out a car that makes 1000 HP and gets 2 MPG and its just so incredible and wonderful and not enough, but an American company puts out a car that makes 400 HP and gets 30 MPG and it's shunned and nobody "neeeeeeds" that much power.

Typical Euro snob double standards.

Never really heard what you're describing. Any half-sane person would be a fool to dismiss a GTO or Vette because it's American...

In fact, I can't recall the last time that has happened... Maybe in your experience, but not mine. Closest thing I can think of is that they call American V8s gas guzzlers when they really aren't compared to their European counterparts. IMO there is so much more to a car than a powertrain, but recent cars (GTO, Z06, G8) are quite difficult to criticize when one considers the performance and quality for the price.

Ignore them, these kinds of posts show up in any thread about foreign sports cars with poor gas mileage. Yet when I look at Viper and Vette threads, the kinds of comments they're talking about aren't there.

been wishing Audi would make another RS6 Avant. Very cool. Audi's are always better on paper than in reality, though. Too much weight too far forward of the front wheels, front-drive-style handling, terrible reliability and resale...

580HP???? goddamn audi....and i just took a look at the new C63 AMG wagon with the 457HP V8 in it. damn.

but i still heart the M5 the most.

roflcopters. *everyone* says that, until they realize how godly the RS cars are.

RS cars hold their value VERY well. a 2003 RS6 still goes for $60k.

quattro is now RWD biased with a 60/40 rear/front default power distribution.

jeremy clarkson rated the RS4 better than the M3 (last gen though). i'd like to see another matchup with the new M3. i think the RS4 would still win.

any supersport car is going to need maintenance. however, if you take care of your car, it will take care of you. audis that are well taken care of can be just as reliable as any toyota/honda. if you let them go though, any car will fail. german or not.

the Audi S6 has a NA V10 that makes 500hp right (the same engine in the Lambo Gallardo)? So those two blowers only added 80hp????

nevermind: just checked

the S6 has a N/A 5.2 V10, that makes 435hp, 398tq.

the Lambo Gallardo has a N/A 5.2 V10, that makes 520hp, 376tq

still, i am guessing the blowers can still do more than that...

By terrible reliability you mean just as reliable as Subaru, Nissan, Infinity and Mazda right? Because that's where Audi is these days, and they keep getting better. And like Fenix mentioned, the RS is a totally different breed of car.

Stock boost usually isn't that high in many production turbo cars. The first few psi usually only make up for the lowered compression ratio. By the time you lower the compression then add 8 psi boost, you're barely passing over what you gave up with compression loss. They also leave a lot on the table so people don't blow up their cars being cheap asses with 87 octane.

Also turbos are sometimes used for efficiency gains more so than pure performance (smaller engine, less compression resistance and power output at cruising speeds, but still have the power when you need it and allow the turbos to spool).

Of course the best part about that is the headroom; enthusiasts can crank up the boost and make cheap and dirty power. Thats why the Cobra, Supra, SRT4, Skyline, etc are all such bad ass cars. None of them ship with the kind of boost the engines were built for and you'll have a hard time finding one still on stock boost. I'd rather buy a car with 580 HP running 8 psi stock before I buy a car with the same power running 17 psi. It's all about potential for me.

bad news: the RS6 (avant at least) will NOT be coming to the US.

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/0...it-for-us-consumption/

I really don't understand why these type of cars are not offered to the US market
It must be a big market for car like that

You guys have the most millionaires and whatnot and they are not releasing it

😕

wagons and hatches are MUCH more popular in europe than in the US (although hatches are becoming more popular).

personally, i think the avants are abominations. but that's just me 😛
