Audi Allroad, am I stupid?

I really want to buy an Allroad and found a great deal on a 2001 6-speed (I would never touch the automatic). I owned an A4 in the past and it was the nicest car I have ever owned, minus the maintenance. I have such a love/hate relationship with Audis, but I really miss driving one. I know an Outback would be smarter, but I hate the fit/finish on them and non-framed windows are so stupid!

I know I will have expensive timing belt changes, and probably leaky air bags, maybe replace the turbos... but I do have a great independent local mechanic (who also owns a 2.7T Audi). So should I talk myself off the cliff, or are you guys going to push me!

How much is it?

A friend of mine drives an AllRoad and absolutely loves it. Ive driving it a few times (manual trans) and it is definitely a smooth driving car. 2.7T has plenty of power to pull that car if you need it; and the AllRoad can even tow quite a bit of weight (seen it done)

As for the air suspension, yes, it will likely have problems. My friend's has issued with leveling sometimes, but a little Vagcom work can fix it easily.

The AllRoad is definitely comfortable inside, and its tough to find any car that rides smoother (even at 130 mph)

Allroad is a nice car. It basically boils down to whether you want to deal with all the issues that car will have. Turbos and airbags aren't exactly cheap, and it appears from my readings over the years you 'will' replace/fix them at some point (usually before or around 100k) costing quite a decent sum of cash. Now if any of those points have been addressed before in this vehicle then I would say yes, go for it. If not then that may be a reason why the deal is so nice.

I was looking at them and they are a pretty damn cool car. Highly overlooked and just sort of bastard child of the Audi lineup. As others mentioned, the airbags in the adjustable suspension can be a problem...as can the inevitble turbo replacement. But the cars are so freaking cheap for what you get...they are hard to pass up. I was looking at a couple of '01's and '03's with 70k-90k miles on them and they were only listed at around $7,000 to $9,000. It's a lot of car for the $$. Just have a $2000 maintenance budget squirelled away for the first couple years and you will probably be okay.

They drive great and are a true definition of "sport utility vehicle".

Awesome car...but the odds are pointing to expensive maintenance costs. If you are prepared for those, I'm sure you'll love it.
