Audi A4

how good of a car are they? im thinking about getting a used one about 99-01 for my first car. They are going about 10k in that range

Nice car if it's an older model. Don't like the radiator on the new ones. It's got good crash ratings. Maintenance is gonna be a b!th though if something goes wrong, although that's a pretty big if if the car's in good shape.

I know my buddy replaced the front end on his twice because of weak metal used to support the front end of the car. After he got rid of that car, he swore he'd never own an Audi again.

Service and parts are VERY pricy. Insurance can be expensive too. Electronic gremlins are a concern, especially since they can cripple the car and you have to pay through the nose to have them fixed.

But the 1.8T is a very well built little engine with lots of room for tinkering. Very economical too.

Uh, can you elaborate?

Of all things, the front end has weak metal? 😕

They're great cars, and buying a used Audi you get a ton for the money. I have an '02 A6 thats been more reliable than my parents '03 Camry and sisters '00 Civic, and '06 Acura. Most of the "the front end has weak metal" genius quotes come from people who have never owned an Audi. And I have never read anything remotely close to that ridiculous problem.

I have a co-worker with an '02 A4 that just did his timing belt, and another with an S4 with 100K+ miles and they both love their cars and agree the Germans make amazing vehicles.

Look for a car that has already had the timing belt done if you're going to get one with 80K+ miles.

Better yet, buy my car now so I don't have to pay to get the timing belt done on it 🙂 It's a 2003 A4 3.0 Quattro with 82,000 miles on it, and the dealer wants $1,800 to get it done 🙁

Nice car, though!

My father-in-law had one a few years older that lasted him 230,000 miles before the engine blew. Overall a very nice car, very efficient, with a lot of nice touches.

its not the metal, it's the ball joints that go. On a car with 100K, expect to replace all of the control arms and get an alignment afterwards. Same thing goes for the CV joint boots. Also timing belt / water pump is a major expense.

Other than that the only random problem I had with mine was dead starter... out of blue. Replacing that was a B!TCH... extremely tight clearances and you need to drop the alternator to get to it.

I would NOT recommend it as a first car, the maintenance is very expensive and so are the parts.

<- owned a 96 A4 modded to hell.

$1800 is complete BS. They are totally screwing you over. I wouldn't imagine that a timing belt on an Audi would be any harder or more expensive than a Jetta, and a water pump and timing belt on mine was between $600-800, which is still rediculous. My sister has an A4, and the dealership charged $600 for a window regulator. We got it done somewhere else, with the exact same part, for $200.

Yeh, the water pump and timing belt replacement on my 2.8L 30V Passat was only around $700 through the VW dealer. I'd shop around for a better rate.

audis used to catch on fire. the reason you don't see any old ones is because they were giant steaming piles of crap, not because they were exclusive. no idea what marketing genius was able to start selling the things again, but ford should hire him/her. oh, wait, they did and no one cared.

I have a 99 (actually 99.5) A4 1.8T. I have modded it pretty heavily (performance oriented). I've probably about doubled the horsepower and torque, acceleration is really nice now, perfect sleeper 😀

you sir, suck... enjoy bi-turbo quattro goodness!😀😀

my brother owns an '02 A4 1.8T. here is what he said in an earlier thread (see here)

mdxtreme3d:

I have a highly modded 2002 A4 1.8T with almost 100k on it. Like any German luxury car, they are generally very reliable if maintained well, but tend to be slightly more work than a comparable import/domestic. Audis in general set the industry standard for interior design and quality of materials. Their Quattro AWD system is second to none, and being fully mechanical, isn't subject to expensive repairs like mitsu/subauru's. The 1.8T engine is highly moddable. Stock is 170HP, a small turbo upgrade will get you 250HP, and a larger GT turbo will get you 300+HP. There's a very active user community, with lots of information available. I hadn't even done an oil change prior to getting my A4, but with the knowledge I found on the forums, I've managed to upgrade nearly every part of my car. It has been very reliable - out of warranty expeneses, not counting regular/reventative maintenance, have been <$500 for the last 50k miles.

Just drop in a 454 V8. No need to change timing belts ever again. LOL

Well this is the one that im looking at. What should i ask about if i go see it? Sorry im a bit new about buying a car.

Im not looking to mod anything at the moment, and i just want something reliable after driving my aunts 91 LS400 that has so many problems with it.

I presently own a '00 A4 w/1.8T, 5-spd, and quattro. It has been the most satisfying auto I've ever owned. They're fun to mod (I've done Stage I MTM ECU, V&S short shifter, 18" O.Z. Racing wheels, 20% tint, and PhatBox audio) and satisfying to drive.

DO NOT buy an automatic as it sucks the life out of the car.

Go for a k04 upgrade, its a nice performance addition. Of course, you would have to get a giac ecu for that.

I hear that the metal of those cars tend to crumple and bend when in an accident. Removing the oil may cause the engine to sieze requiring a replacement of the whole engine. The car will even stop and leave you stranded when the gas supply is gone. I'd stay away from an Audi if I were you.

They are great cars until you hit the 100K mark on the odometer. Then the engines and front ends on them fall out.

I have owned a 1993 90CS(What the A4 replaced) and an 01 A4. They are nice cars and ride well. But just dont expect to get a lot of mileage past 100K without repair bills for things like catalytic converters, wheel bearings, and ball joints.

Here is my experiences first had

1993 90CS - two Ball joints, 2 catalytic converters, seals shot, fuel pump, brakes were shite
01 A4 - 2 Wheel bearings, some thing in the tranny was leaking, blinker mechanism in steering column went out,CV joint boots. Brakes were shite.

2nd hand
Friends 1997 A$ 1.8 - Turbo always going out, front end went out twice, the 2nd time he sold it to some poor lady.
Friends 03 A6 4.2 - Tranny fell out the bottom of it at 60,000 miles, wheel bearing shot.
Friends 00 S4 - Seals shot, wheel bearings, and the tranny needed to be replaced. Cost of 3800, he traded it in on a new jeep to some poor dealership.

Just like their VW brand, Audi has many quality control issues.

About 18 months ago I was looking into buying an Audi A4 from the same years and from what I read through research there is A LOT of problems with them.
