Just curious if anyone else has or has had one.

Ive got an old '84 5000 turbo, but I have the later (1986+) MC engine in it.

My first car was a 1989 Audi 100. It had 276,000 miles on it when I got it and is probably my favorite car I've owned to date. It had virtually no brakes, a failing transmission that never wanted to shift in to 2nd gear (3 speed automatic), and no heat during the Minnesota winters. No matter what was wrong with that thing, it still refused to die. I eventually named the car "Hitler's Revenge". I got rid of the car with close to 290,000 miles on it. A couple months afterwards we got a letter from the state of Colorado telling me my car had been stolen and recoverd in downtown Denver. Apparently somebody stole the car from the dealership I sold it to, drove it from Minnesota to Denver, and was arrested. It makes me wonder what that car is up to today. Hopefully it's causing chaos somewhere in this country.

The heat was broken on mine for a while too, but a few days of -40 winter made me fix that mighty quick.

And as I recall, the 4000 and 5000 models were the North American versions of the 100 and 200 respectively. The 80's were especially bad for VW/Audi, with a shaky American economy, goofy car designs (2.3 Inline 5-cyl engines :Q), and numerous reports of a shitstorm of problems with their car. In fact, VW was real close to abandoning the American market with Audi. Guess it's a good thing for them that they didn't.

My folks had a 5000S, early-eighties, can't remember the year. It had problems out the wazoo. It was one of the early cars to have power locks I guess and continually had electrical problems with them and other things. I also remember it having engine troubles and being in the shop more often than not. We really wanted to like the car but it was such a POS that my parents dumped it off for a song as soon as they could.

Yeah, they had some problems. mostly with electronics, which were pretty much being pioneered at that time period.

The engine seems pretty reliable in my experience, and relatively efficient for a big car.

I still have the 1984 computer and FI system in it, I suppose I should change it to the '86. theres about a 20hp difference between them, so im not sure what it is.. more boost?

I drove an '89 Audi 100 for a few years. Can't knock on it too bad, because it didn't have a single spot of rust ten years on (in the rust belt), but its transmission did give out a little early. To be honest, I liked the feel of my '89 Accord a little better...

As far as 5000's go, I heard the electrical problems etc. were so notorious that they gave rise to a phrase found in rap songs: "I'm 5000" - meaning essentially "I'm out"
