WASHINGTON ? Attorney General John Ashcroft is recusing himself as head of the CIA leak probe, Justice Department sources said Tuesday.

The investigation will be handed over to the U.S. attorney in Chicago, Patrick Fitzgerald. Deputy Attorney General James Comey was planning on making an announcement in an afternoon news conference.

The investigation was prompted in September after a CIA employee's name was leaked to the press during the summer. The employee is the wife of Ambassador Joe Wilson, who accused the White House of knowing that intelligence it used in the State of the Union address in January was false.

The intelligence, taken from British sources, suggested that Iraq had sought uranium from the African nation of Niger. Wilson had gone on an eight-day trip to the nation in 2002 and could not find proof of the claim's truth.

The reason for the recusal is not immediately known.

IMO, this is a class move.

You were losing me in other threads, but my respect for you is increasing back to pre-post levels :) I thought I would get the typical "Ashcroft is a liar and covering up more White House lies and taking away our freedoms" nonsense....glad to see you are a sensible man.

If there is a stink, fitzgerald will find the source. He is good at what he does.

He put the Gambino's on ice and just a few days ago indicted former Illinois governor george ryan in the license for bribes scandal.

So far there, of 73 enditements...he has 59 convictions-12 cases outstanding and 2 fugitives as yet not found.

Impressive bastard that I would not want on my ass.

In retrospect Ashcroft should have done this at the beginning of the inquiry,
if nothing more than to disassociate himself from the appearance of special intrest.

What's the signifigance here? Why?

What makes Fitzgerald any less of a political appointee than ashcroft? Does'nt the conflict of intrest still exist?

Investigating yourself must be nice.

Why don't you get off your ass and look into it a little bit and you can answer your own questions.

I'll throw you one bone, when the then new Illinois Republican Senator Fitzgerald (no relation, sorry) appointed Fitzgerald as the District US Attorney, it was solely to have a clean and clear honest investigation into the Republican (RINO) Governor Ryans sorry ass antics. The Daley/Cook County democrat mafia found that to be acceptable. It was the Republicans that put up the fight.

Because of the heat and antics that took place, Senator Fitzgerald will not be running for another term and that is to damn bad. I consider him one of the few honest politicians around and we will probably be saddled with another corrupt prick or prickette (Fitzgerald beat carol Moseley Braun out of her seat) to go along with that turd Durbin.

You take what you can get, and attorney Fitzgerald is about as clean a pick for the task as either side could hope for.

I guess I have to since you seem to think Senators appoint US attoneys not presidents.

Futhermore this is a Bush appointee investigating a BUSH leak. An inherant conflict of intrests exists there or don't you see it? This is the same as investigating your boss. Ashcroft could have done that just fine, and he has more experiance.

OK. Lets play the word game. The senator RECOMMENDED Fitzgerald be APPOINTED by Bush and then CONFIRMED by Congress. This RECOMMENDATION for APPOINTMENT is one of the perks a Senator has. The worthy socialist turd Durbin even approved of the RECOMMENDATION and urged Bush by letter to APPOINT Fitzgerald so he could be CONFIRMED by Congress.

I see no conflict of interest. I see who originally HIRED fitzgerald as a government employee, I see his RESUME' and I see his RECORD and I see what the normally whining lefties have to say about him and what he has shown and that pretty much just leaves your opinion sitting there with the tin foil hat crowd.

You hoping for that fountain of impartiality Janet Reno to circle the wagons or what :/

You still don't have the words right if that the ploy you're trying to make...RIIIIGHT:;) I gave you the opening by using appoint to see if you'd correct me. Since you did'nt I assume you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

It's nominate. But then you knew that eh.

No conflict of intrest lol... Clinton would have billions already spent in special prosecutors and you know it... Or maybe you don't.

Sorry, I don't "ploy" or "correct" people. I leave that to the wankers that enjoy playing the forum version of Candyland to amuse themselves.

Oh I'm amused.

I ask a simple series of uestions which rely on you'alls mind set for the signifigance of this recuse and you tell me to "get off your ass and look into it a little bit and you can answer your own questions" sorry, not found anywhere pal. Cerebro computer does'nt exist yet.

Then you go on to "educate" me on the US Attoney nomination process which is totally unrelated to the signifigance of the recuse since it's an indentical process, by the same president, for these two men.

Nope no anwers to be found here just a bunch of partisan Bullsh1t and name calling.

:D

We're not talking bout self actualization here though moonie.

Can't believe a special independant prosecutor is'nt being put forth here. Clinton had several for non-treasonous offenses. This barly is making a wave. Scary thing for the CIA guys still in theater, they know don't cross the administration of you're toast.

Fitzgerald is solid. You aren't going to get a better DA. Unless you want to animate dead RFK. Then you could have a leftist biased witchhunt like everyone wants.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. We'll see if he does a credible job.

Ashcroft did the right thing, but should have done it sooner. Apparently he got some information about the case that is unsettling. This news is bad news for someone at the White House with the initials K.R.

It seems fairly obvious to fill-in-the-blanks here: Ashcroft recused himself because (A) there is a conflict of interests -or- (B) there is some bias or partiality on Ashcroft's part in regards to this case. Meanwhile, I'm still interested in hearing the specifics. Unless of course the specifics are to be held tightly under wraps due to nat'l security or some other such nonsense.

You have to admit that it is some strange timing. The event happened months ago, but now something is being done to look into it? Did he make it a new years resolution or something. Choosing another person to lead the investigation on one of the last days of the year? Maybe the twig holding up the big dam of crap is about to break and he wanted to get out of the way. :)

OTOH msnbc, same story tells that our favorite guy(sarcasm implied) is on another vacation down in texas. It must be nice to take multiple month long vacations.
