I just called the Mentor Marsh Board to see if our local fire departments were reimbursed for fighting these fires. She said she didn't know, but gave me the name and number of a gal who would know.

She said the marsh wouldn't fall under wetlands regulations, because it's already a state preserve, as of the '70s. The local government wouldn't even begin to try and get rid of this swamp. We lost tens of thousands of dollars fighting the local transit authority. Fighting the state would be ludicrous. If Alaskans can't get drilling permitted in their state, having the backing of the president and half of Congress, what chance would we have against our state, who could also fall back on federal regulations? It would be a lost cause, just like this silly swamp. And no, we don't have any snail darters in there!

Just spoke with my neighbor, who is employed by Classic Ford-Mentor. He is a finance manager there. His employer also owns one of the highest volume Chevy dealers in this state and several others. He's got a BMW dealership on the same campus, with loads of Mini Coopers in a special showroom across the street. He just acquired the Ford dealership a couple years ago, and is moving it to this same auto campus.

I asked my neighbor if they were getting his new building squared away yet. He said they were supposed to break ground last October, but had just now finished the struggle with the Wetlands issues. Now they were stumbling through some problem with owls in the area where this several million dollar building is going. He doesn't know how long that will take. Typical...

Sigh... man, that's just the way the government is always shaking down car dealers as a form of legal government extortion. Think of it as an alternative tax. When they think they've shook out enough, they'll let him build. The "enviromentment" is just a convenient excuse.
Focus to the bigger picture....

We should pave all the wetlands and exterminate the owls and replace it all with car dealerships.

Brilliant!

This is the very center crossroads of a city of 50,000, and these guys (who pay MEGA bucks in taxes) still have to play games with wetlands and wild creatures! I'd say it's about time to revise this BS. Of course, that's stating the obvious... to some people.

I'm not a treehugger by any means, but the owls were there first, why should they evacuate their homes because a dealership wants to sell some crummy Fords there? If I wanted to tear your house down so I could sell some Daewoo's you'd probably be annoyed too.

Anywhere a human home is built, some critters are displaced. Where do you draw the line? Our city planners have already opted to use this area for commercial use. That's a done deal, as was the formation of the city, 200 years ago. Bottom line: These current regulations are LUDICROUS!

If the area was zoned for commercial use then what is the problem? Maybe the zoning board was mistaken and didn't take into account (are they endangered?) endangered species which have more right to their homes than a car dealer.

One day hopefully we will have vast expanses of car dealerships as far as the eye can see, no more pesky owls or wetlands, just bricks and cement.

Beautiful.

I remember when I lived in Ohio that they built up the area I was in so much that you started seeing deer running down major roads all of the sudden. The forest where they used to live was cut down and turned into a golf course/housing developement.

Why is it the humanity's responsibility to keep other species from extinction? Superior species replace inferior ones and drive them to extinction all the time. That's the way nature works.
We are a part of nature, and have a right to drive other species to extinction and impact the environment just as much as any other species. Do you go after a wolf and tell it, "don't eat that rodent, it's endangered"?

This auto campus is in the exact center of the city. If you can't expand your dealership there, then where in the hell are you supposed to do it?

Vic is probably closest to the truth. It seems these projects always end up getting built eventually, but not without a ton of environmental red tape at the Federal, State and Local level. In the end, it's probably just an excuse for bureaucrats to exist.

Talk about deer running around all over. There's another issue the Bambi lovers cause to become worse. We are completely overrun with deer in this neck of the woods. WTF are we supposed to do with these things? Reintroduce wolves or what? Every couple years we try to extend the hunting season a bit, only to get shot down by voters who can't imagine anyone wanting to harm the poor deer.

I am all for deer hunting... the season is on here in Sweden... ehhh... but it is on all year round... sooo... hehe...

I just shoot the ones that get into my garden, 4-5 each summer... i skin them in my basement where i can just flush the blood with real hot water direct from the boiler...

I got enough meat to last a year, i give some away to my parents, some to friends, most of it i eat myself, it's the most tender meat to throw on the grill... i love it with garlic, i love it with basil, i love it with pepper, i love it anyway i can think of...

*goes to get a snack of dried, smoked deer meat*

I'm all for controlling the deer population in a reasonable manner. In my case though, it wasn't a problem though. That is until they decided cut down most of a wooded region to build a golf course, which displaced the deer population out into a more urban area and onto major roads causing frequent auto accidents. Just seems a little irresponsible.
