Parts Express's deal of the day. Since it's a Friday, price is good until 6PM EDT April 21.

Here's the link

Specs:
*Power handling: 50 watts RMS/70 watts max. *VCdia: 1" *Le: 1.0 mH *Znom: 8 ohms *Re: 7.0 ohms *Frequency response: 70-4,500 Hz *Fs: 70 Hz *SPL: 86 dB 2.83V/1m *Vas: .18 cu. ft. *Qms: 3.18 *Qes: .62 *Qts: .52 *Xmax: 1 mm *Net weight: 2.5 lb. *Dimensions: A: 5-1/2", B: 4-3/8", C: 2-1/2", D: 3-1/4"

This would make a good small bookshelf speaker for the office or home theater setup (you'll still want a separate sub). At $5 each, you could assemble an inexpensive line array out of these coupled with a few planar tweeters. Imagine 12 of these in each array (bringing your power handling to 600W RMS per channel). 5 1/4" might be a bit large for a line array but the price is definitely right!

Edit: if you read PE's description carefully, you'll see a subtle clue about which speaker manufacturer these were originally produced for. 😉

Thanks. I've got a couple of tweeters that have been waiting to be put in some speakers. I ordered six (6) so I could make tower speakers with three of those in each.
Shipping was only $10 so my total was ~$40 shipped. 🙂

I used to install pro-audio home studios for professional musicians, and I also was a pretty decent car audio/alarms/cellular installer back in the early 90s, but I must confess I AM WITHOUT A CLUE 😕.... Would one of ya'll please be kind enough to let me (and anyone else who cares) know who these speakers are sometimes sold to? At that price I would be very interested in picking up a few pairs if they're anything decent.

I'm not sure if I am 100% sure. But think Marimbas & Kettle not as words but, letters. Then again it could just be my imagination since, I had too look through quite a list of speaker manufactors before I came up with this.

Hot deals is not the forum for mystery posts. Out with it, what manufacturer were these OEM'ed for?

Right. That's who I think it is. I wasn't going to name the company since PartsExpress didn't come out and say it (I don't want to spread misinformation in case M&K is not the company).

Anyway, it's not often that you find a speaker manufacturer list who their OEMs are. It would probably be a marketing disaster for a company to admit that the guts of their flagship speakers consist of $35 worth of drivers and $75 worth of crossover components.

many times, its a well-designed 20$ enclosure, 10$ in drivers, and maybe 15$ in crossovers.... you pay: 199.99$ on SALE..... normally: $249.99

Cracked me up when i finally cracked a pair of my cerwin-Vega's... Great enclosure, crappy drivers, so-so crossovers... rebuilt them with good drivers, and better crossovers, and those speakers rivaled my fathers 800$ studio monitors... That and the 20lbs. of lead in the bases...

nice price on what looks to be a decent mid driver... I need to find a copy of LEAP before I start thinkin of replacin my Paradigm's tho

Can any of you amateur/professional speaker builders give me some links to good DIY sites on speaker construction? I picked up two old 3-way technics tower speakers down the block when someone was throwing them out. I figure about $75 of replacement drivers (and possibly crossovers) for both towers would make a pretty decent stereo setup for a secondary room. The towers are pretty sturdy and the most of the existing driver cones have been either punctured or pushed in from the outside. The silk dome tweeters are still intact and sound great. I'm just not completely sure as to go about replacing the faulty drivers with load matched replacement drivers, and an informative site or two would help.

Also, what do you experienced builders think about Wharfedales? I have 2 Wharfedale Emerald 95's in my HT and they sound great, although I know they could use more power then my 70 wpc 5.1 Yamaha receiver can dish out.

daveman - These were 8-ohm speakers so they'd be much quieter compared to traditional 4-ohm car speakers. You could achieve 4 ohms by wiring a pair in parallel but you'd be better off finding a 4-ohm speaker.
