Red Dwarf is a British comedy. Think Old Doctor Who + Odd Couple... cracks me up, but if you don't like the sound of it as I described it, you probably won't like it.
I highly recommend the new Dr. Who's they're good scifi
My wife will watch Stargate Atlantis but not sg1...
I don't have too much experience with British Comedy, however I loved the office, and those Shawn of the Dead - Hot Fuzz Movies so maybe I will give it a shot. If its that dry, sarcastic stuff I'm in..
Oh, some of it's dry and sarcastic. And there's a good deal of gross-out, too. The interplay between Lister and Rimmer is always a highlight, and the mockery they make of classic sci fi tropes are very clever.
I'll definitely check out the Stargate, and look into the Dr. Who (never heard of that one)
Dude, how could you have never heard of Doctor Who? It had a 26 year run, from 63 to 89, longest of any sci fi series. It's to UK sci fi what Star Trek is to America. Thankfully the new series was geared towards allowing new viewers to catch up with relative ease.
Nope, haven't seen Babylon yet.. I was considering it though.
You won't regret it. As was said above, though, don't worry if the first season is a bit dull. Season 2 is where it really begins. It's also amusing to see early generation CGI-for-TV work and how quickly it evolves over the 5 years the show ran. The original 5 seasons and the movie set are what you'd want to see. For the movies there's a prequel story you'll want to avoid until after seeing the whole series, though still watch the pilot episode first.

Look for show called "Threshold." It lasted only a year, but it was really good. Very much ahead of it's time. It starred Brent Spiner (Data from ST:TNG) and Peter Dinklage ("The Station Agent").

That show was horribly bad.

Being a huge TNG and DS9 fan, I think I could help you out.

What NOT to watch:
Enterprise and Voyager were garbage...
Babylon 5
Stargate Atlantis
Sg-1
Lost

Shows DEFINITELY to watch:
Firefly
new Battlestar Galactica
the 4400
Farscape(watch first episode and skip to episode 16 or so.. it picks up at end of sason 1 and turns into one of the best shows you will EVER watch on tv.

Once done with these, you might want to try SG-1 as long as you don't expect anything serious, can deal with many terrible episodes, and want something lite.

I personally liked Stargate SG1 and the new SG-Atlantis
Star Trek Voyager was pretty entertaining as well.

Babylon was intriguing at first but it kind of spiraled into absurdity as the series dragged on.

Odyssey 5 on Showtime: This aired for 1 season and started to get interesting but then they ended it abruptly.

I liked some of the early X-files as well.

If you want to go old school there's the Twilight Zone, the new Twilight Zone, and the Outer Limits.

Does Futurama count as science fiction? I loved Futurama.

Star Trek: The Next Generation also sucked ass for the first year or two. Then it matured.

You have to realize

shadow9d9

is a closeted gay boy.

Ignore ANYTHING she has to say, it's tainted with suppressed homoism.

shadow9d9, why not seek help at your local church, I hear they can cure your condition. hormones might help.

Until then , keep your illness private.

shadow9d9 dislikes Babylon 5 , because his homosexual advances to cast members were rebuffed.

Frankly, anyone that doesn't like B5 is not only a closet case but an imbecile as well.

Babylon 5 especially if you liked DS9. Stargate is pretty good and is a pretty far departure form the movie (other than using some of the plot line started in the movie). O'Neil >>> O'Neill

Gotta remember Dr. Who is essentially a kid's show and always has been. Yes, it is watchable by adults (I sometimes watch it myself), but don't expect sex and violence...

/edit: but Billie Piper in the first two seasons is hot

Sci-fi shows typically have little sex and violence anyway 😛

the new Dr. Who is a decent series but you have to watch it with a different mindset. It is deliberately wacky, tacky and not serious. It's not strictly sci-fi either because there's a lot of fantasy elements.

I suggest Stargate SG-1, and Babylon 5 (if you can tolerate the occasional cheesy acting (especially Season 1) and CGI)

I'll also say Farscape. Unfortunately it was a very abrupt last season, so get the mini-series movie as well that wraps it up much better.
The Lost Room is good too... it's not space sci-fi, but a good mini-series nonetheless.

So if it doesnt have sex and violence in spades, its not for adults?

Wow, how far we have sunk
