Tomorrow, March 22nd, 2007, the PS3 will receive firmware update v1.6. Included in that update is the PS3's Folding@Home utility.
(and the addition of background downloading, but lets not digress shall we?)

So all those that own a PS3, make sure you update to 1.6 and during your freetime run the app.
also, if you only plan to run the app once, do so this coming Sunday (25MAR07). This is because the folks on the forum at us.playstation.com, are trying to rally together everyone to use Folding@Home. If possible start sometime Sunday night and run it through at least 7am Monday morning. At least, that is what they are calling for.

This will probably use an extra 150 watts of electricity compared to leaving it off, based on power-under-load tests I've seen for the PS3.

Are there any benchmarks yet of how much work it will accomplish compared to a core 2 desktop?

thats why I don't necessarily plan on leaving it on that long. And the thing does get a little warm due to the way the vent design is (better if standing than lying horizontal), so I don't really want to stress the system with that much heat for that long of time.
power won't bother me at the moment.. it's campus provided. but yea however, its not necessarily a 'green' system.
basically, I have no clue. and I don't think so, as far as the second question goes.

Are there teams like the PC version? Can I contribute to the AT team with my PS3?

Dave I believe the PS3 version will be much faster than any PC, at least according to what I've heard.

I'm totally getting a PS3 for this!

edit: yes, I'm a folding fanatic, despite the fact that I have such an old PC

edit2: Hmm...the GPUs seem to do really well. ATI's X1xxx series correct?

Benchmark. Pretty impressive.
<keanu> whoa </keanu>

"Folding at Home by OS stats:
1 Gigaflop per PC
3 Gigaflops per Intel Mac
30 Gigaflops of Folding Power per PS3"

1 TFLOP required 33.2 PS3, or 376.6 intel macs, or 1,052 PCs (mixed speeds).

The PCs are various ages and speeds, but the intel macs will be at least core solo 1.6(?) GHz.

There's somebody on the NeoGAF forum who has kept his system on since launch. It's probably been idle quite a bit, but these systems are built to last.

It's one of those programs that you run to do calculations for a large project. This particular one is for protein sequences (I believe?). There are other ones on the PC for things like cancer research or searching for ET's (heh).

As if the PS3 didn't already cost enough, imagine the power usage running a distributed application 24/7.

Someone have a Kill-A-Watt meter?

It'd probably be about $10 a month. But $5 a month for online gaming is too much. :D

Seems like a good way to kill a PS3.

I don't think they're really expecting people to run it 24/7. Most of the use will probably be seen during breaks between game play (one of the options is to run it once the system goes to idle).

I really think this will lead to overheating issues and kill many a PS3, at least, the first generation models out right now. And at 600 dollars, its not something I want to destroy. I won't be spending 600 dollars just to crunch numbers.

Any word on whether MS and Nintendo will follow suit with their consoles?

As I said earlier, there's a guy who has had the console on for over four months now. There have been no horror stories about the PS3 yet like there are for the 360 or the Wii--I'm not too worried.

I'll be leaving this on while I'm at school. Got 8.5 hours left on my first unit :)

Nope. Wasn't this even announced before launch? Anyway, this particular version has been optimized for the Cell processor, so if it will happen, they won't be similar to this.
