I'm a first time builder and have put together my PC and gotten it to POST so far. I'm curious about the I/O shield that comes with the mobo. I am using that I/O shield and the USB ports on the back have these EMI springs or some kind of metal spring things that are on top of each USB port. Are those supposed to be visible from the outside of the case, i.e. on the back?

Also, after screwing my mobo in to my case I realized that there is a small piece of metal from the I/O shield covering a bit of the 1394 port. Should I just force this out of the way from the outside?

Finally, the audio ports are not really coming out of the I/O shield, they are kind of recessed b/c the I/O shield seems to be kind of popping outward a bit in that area. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Those metal spring tabs should rest on top of the metal housings the I/O connectors come out of. On my I/O shield they were flattened down when I first opened the accessory box - you do need to bend them up a little ways before you install the mobo. If they're obstructing any ports, your installation is incorrect.

The audio ports should be coming out of the I/O shield properly - the little spring tabs in that part of the I/O shield are a little aggressive. Flatten them out a little if you need to.

THanks for the reply. The EMI springs that go on top of the jack blocks for the PS/2 ports(I think), do rest on top of the port. The only thing is that for the USB ports I don't know how the springs would rest on anything because they are actually on top of each of the USB ports, like in the gap between the top and bottom USB ports.

Yes, the port should NOT be blocked. My IO shield did the same thing , the little tab for the USB port and for the Firewire port bent into the port itself - fortunately I corrected it before screwing the motherboard in. I would be nervous about powering on the PC in such a state, who knows what grounding that current in through the IO shield out possible to the case could do.
