I only drink a couple of cups a week, typically on the weekend. So it probably has something to do with keeping coffee fresh. If the wife and I drank multiple cups daily I would prefer a regular brewer. We also keep a pretty good variety on hand, so one day might be Green Mountain, the next might be breakfast blend. So going slowly through different types like that, having indvidual sealed cups would have to keep it fresher than opened containers that sit in a cupboard or fridge for months... at least I would think that would be the case.

like Spyder, I only ever drink a couple cups of coffee at home in any given week (and sometimes none at all).

making an entire pot feels like a waste (and generates an extra dish or two to wash) and a package of coffee is bound to go stale before I even make a dent in it.

as a point of reference, I bought a pack of 50 k-cups in August... I'm not going to go and count them, but if I've used half of them in the past 6 months, I'd be surprised.

they're also nice to have for when you've got company and one person wants hot chocolate, one person wants tea, one prefers flavored coffee, etc.
 
I went to the self-grind/pack k-cup. Takes some practice to get a good cup (have to grind the beans very fine and pack kind of tight.) I am still enjoying the Starbucks Xmas blend. Yum!
 
Someone brought one of those machines to work and I tried their "coffee" but thought it sucked. Their espresso and cappucino was horrible.

fair enough. I brew a half pot of coffee a day and it gets used up so i guess we have different habits. it makes sense if you just want something instant like tea but dont want it to taste as bad as instant coffee. of course you could always store your coffee beans in an airtight container. dunno if it would last 6 months or not though

I tried to think of a way around it, but there aren't many other materials that would work with this thing....

according to the people at Sur la Table, Kuerig, or whichever one we were looking at at the time, has their own collection and recycling program through the mail.

I have no idea how effective it is, b/c that was one of our top concerns--the other being cost/cup--which is ridiculous in comparison to what it currently costs us.

yeah.

before I moved, I had a drip pot and ground coffee.

I lived in that apartment for 4 years and when I moved out, the first/only bag I ever bought was like 3/4 full.
 
Keurig has its benefits. It's really good for portion control and I've had less coffee per day since we got it. Even for someone like me who likes using large coffee cups (~12oz), one k-cup is strong enough. You don't NEED to use the plastic cups, they also use an adapter that works with everything between coarse and fine-ground. Some say it leaks but the trick is to lower the rubber O-ring on the top needle. You get more mileage for the $15 adapter and a pound of coffee compared to the premade k-cups without the waste.

The major downside of the adapter is it takes longer to shuffle coffee for a new brew, especially if you only have one adapter. Autodrip pots are better in that regard for groups of people.

Yea, we bought one of those, I don't know if any brewed coffee even came out. Water just started pouring out the area where the k-cup goes.

Are you even reading this thread? If anything it's the anti-Keurig users who are coming off smug here, I can't tell if most of them are just coffee snobs who don't like how it tastes or thread-life environmentalists trying to come up with whatever BS they can to stuff the strawman before burning.

Pretty sure that was his point.
 
My mom has a Keurig, and while I like the thought behind it I don't think the little containers ever come with enough coffee. Mine always seems pretty watered down. I dunno, maybe that's how it's supposed to be. I don't drink a whole lot of coffee, but it just didn't seem like the right proportions were there.

I usually make the smallest size and they seem perfect. Medium is a bit less flavored but nothing that I would complain about.
