1. Dr Dre
2. Eminem
3. Ja Rule

I'm not sure if they are the top 3 hip hop artists of the decade but they are my three favorite.🙂

I also really like Ludacris. 🙂

monotony, you've heard of Gangstarr before, right? That's who Guru is, if not, check out the moment of truth album, that's the album that really put me on him. He also has a solo album out, listen to the song with Donnel Jones, hustlin dayz, and the one with Amel Larrieux, that song put me on her.

As for 106, one of my friends who was the 18 week champ down here is about to be goin on that show to battle. It looks like ruff rydaz is tryin to sign mad people, because they are talkin to him too.

Any producers in ATOT?

Jeez, I can't single 3 out, so many have had their ups and downs, my favs tho are as follows:

Jay-Z (before the flossy stuff, though I like it, he was great, his first 3 albums were golden IMO)
Busta Rhymes (first couple of albums had lots of creativitey, which brings me to...)
Outkast
Mos Def
Pharoahe Monch (flow/wordplay that rivals Em's)
Common
Eminem
Canibus (too bad his career never took off, but the best rhymer I've ever heard)
Nas
Big Pun (nasty...just nasty! crazy flow 🙂)
Big L (RIP, the king of the one liners)
Slick Rick
Redman (the most consistant artist out there IMO)

Ja Rule needs to eat a fat dick, his first album was nice, he turned into TRASH after that :| Murder Inc blows, BTW

KidViciou$, who you talkin about, Jin? I know Poster Boy was up there for a while, but I didn't hear about him goin to RR.

Ahhhh, Gangstarr... tight as they come. I haven't listened to him in years though. What's your friends mic name? Would we have heard of him yet? I thought it was strange that Jin signed w/ RR b/c they don't seem to fit each other well. Maybe RR is going for a change of image? What's your friend's style like?

I totally agree with this. I like Rule when he FIRST dropped... but Murda, Inc and all subsequent projects have been garbage. He's not about hip hop...he's about sellin himself (MTV Awards?!?!!), which is cool if that's your thing I guess...

Gangstarr is lengendary! Cmon, Between the Guru and Primo, big impacts have been made on Hip Hop with those names

Dead Prez is CRAZY! I love their album! I don't agree with everything, but just hearing them express such serious views across a whole album is such a breath of fresh air, it make the whole thing thoroughly enjoyable. Mind Sex and Happiness are very cool songs to vibe to (in fact, Happiness can pick my mood up any time of the day).

Yeah, I think I should have worded the question as your favorite 3 of the decade. Saying to top 3 can open the doors up to arguments about who have had the biggest impact on hip hop, which is an entirely different discussion. There have been too many great artists that have kept hip hop evolving... doesn't mean a lot of them have been my favorites though. Although my favorites were probably seriously influenced by them.

I thought there would be more hip hop fans on ATOT!

I'm not by any means a big rap fan, but I used to enjoy listening to the great sampling and evocative drumloops of Public Enemy and Gangstarr. Fear of Black Planet, and No More Mr. Nice Guy were killer albums. That stuff really moved you. Nowadays everything is slowed down with stilted syncopation, pathetic "sampling" (since when did wholesale copying constitute sampling?) and the lyrics are about as dumb as you can get. Although its more glamorized and over-produced than ever, Rap has really become ghetto, hasn't it? 🙂

English teacher in the house? What about these: I see more evolution than charles darwin... Only bid you ever did was on my lexus after I auctioned it... I know killas who spent more time in the pen than ink... Similies or metaphors? Maybe I need to edit my post to say king of similies? I think he's the king of both...

Not an english teacher, just observing something i learned in the 3rd grade. Guess thats a pretty valid indication of the intelligence levels of most rappers. At least common sense had the umm...common sense to say "You think I'm nice with metaphors, but these are similies..."

Go figure.

The Roots
Jurassic 5
A Tribe Called Quest
Mos Def
DJ Krush and DJ Shadow if you consider them hiphop
Del the Funky Homosapien(and the many colaborations with various people mainly Dan the Automator)

I've always liked the Beastie Boys too

gotta be a freakin' joke right? ja rule??? Now what does HE has in common with hip hop? Ja Rule makes some p*ssy R&B although I like this kinda music, it's definately NOT hip hop.

Tweakmm, now THOSE are some real hip hopers.

No need to be rude about it. I was just trying to be lighthearted about it...damn. Besides, you just assumed that the quotes I posted were supposed to be metaphors. I never said they were, they are just some of my favorite lines. You are definately the least fun poster on this thread. Thanks for the input though, wont' make the same mistake again. As far as intelligence, I'll just ignore that statement because I know you cant intelligently speak on the level of intellect of a bunch of people you don't know. They are obviously smart enough to be millionares, though, which is better than 99% of the rest of us. Maybe we can have a piss contest now too, if it will make you feel better. Might as well, now that you're shitting on this thread...

I appreciate it.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I think what sets good hip hop artists apart is recognizing all the BS that rap is right now, and speaking about it. 99% of the MTV rap is what you're talking about here. People never even bother to listen to really good songs, b/c they base their opinions on what they hear on the radio, etc. "Hip hop is in a state of 9-1-1"...

[edit]Anyone seen this yet? Bizarre...[/edit]

Imma lay down on you all here...

1.) Tribe called quest - how can you not deny the album "the low end theory" as one of the greatest?

Q-Tip & Phife:

Q: Back in the days on the boulevard of Linden, we used to kick routines and presence was fittin'. It was I the abstract

P: And me the five footer. I kicks the mad style so step off the frankfurter.

Q: Yo, Phife, you remember that routine that we used to make spiffy like mister clean?

P: Um um, a tidbit, um, a smidgen. I don~t get the message so you gots to run the pigeon.

Q: You on point Phife?

P: All the time, tip.

Q: You on point Phife?

P: All the time, tip.

Q: You on point Phife?

P: All the time, tip.

Q: Well, then grab the microphone and let your words rip.

P: Now here's a funky introduction of how nice I am. Tell your mother, tell your father, send a telegram. I'm like an energizer 'cause, you see, I last long. My crew is never ever wack because we stand strong. Now if you say my style is wack that's where you're dead wrong. I slayed that body in El Segundo then push it along. You'd be a fool to reply that Phife is not the man 'cause you know and I know that you know who I am. A special shot of peace goes out to all my pals, you see. And a middle finger goes for all you punk MC's. 'Cause I love it when you wack MC's despise me. They get vexed, I roll next, can~t none contest me. I'm just a fly MC who's five foot three and very brave. On job remaining, no I'm chaining cause I misbehave. I come correct in full effect have all my hoes in check. And before I get the butt the jim must be erect. You see, my aura~s positive I don't promote no junk. See, I'm far from a bully and I ain't a punk. Extremity in rhythm, yeah that's what you heard. So just clean out your ears and just check the word.

Q: Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check it out. Check it out. Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Play tapes y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check the rhyme y'all. Check it out. Check it out.

P: Back in days on the boulevard of Linden, we used to kick routines and the presence was fittin' It was I the Phifer,

Q: And me, the abstract. The rhymes were so rumpin' that the brothers rode the 'zack.

P: Yo, tip you recall when we used to rock Those fly routines on your cousin~s block.

Q: Um, let me see, damn I can't remember. I receive the message and you will play the sender.

P: You on point Tip?

Q: All the time Phife.

P: You on point Tip?

Q: Yeah, all the time Phife.

P: You on point Tip?

Q: Yo, all the time Phife.

P: So play the resurrector and give the dead some life.

Q: Okay, if knowledge is the key then just show me the lock. Got the scrawny legs but I move just like Luke Brock, With speed. I'm agile plus I'm worth your while. One hundred percent intelligent black child. My optic presentation sizzles the retina. How far must I go to gain respect? Um. Well, it's kind of simple, just remain your own Or you'll be crazy sad and alone. Industry rule number four thousand and eighty, record company people are shady. So kids watch your back 'cause I think they smoke crack, I don't doubt it. Look at how they act. Off to better things like a hip-hop forum. Pass me the rock and I'll storm with the crew and ... Proper. What you say Hammer? Proper. Rap is not pop, if you call it that then stop.

NC, y'all check the rhyme y'all. SC, y'all check it out y'all. Virginia, check the rhyme y'all. Check it out. Out. In London, check the rhyme, y'all.

2.) Gangstarr - No way you'll never make it

Come with the weak shi*, I break kids

Step into my zone, mad rhymes will stifle ya

Lines like rifles go blast when I kick some ass

A lot of rappers be like one time wonders

Couldn't say a fly rhyme if there was one right under

Their noses, I hate those motherfuc*in posers

But I'm so real to them it's scary

And with my unique skills nah you can't compare me

And no we don't make wack tracks

and all the suckers get pushed back when I'm kickin real facts

I represent set up shi* like a tent boy

You're paranoid cause you're my son like Elroy

And you'd be happy as hell to get a record deal

Maybe your soul you'd sell to have mass appeal

3.) Special Ed - thats right i'm talking you back to the old school "cuz i;m the magnificent"

am the magnificent!
I'm the magnificent with the sensational style
And I can go on and on for like a mile, a minute
I get in it like a car and drive
And if the record is smash, I can still survive
'Cause I'm the man of steel on the wheel that you're steerin'
Or rather playin' on the record that you're hearin'
You might not understand what I'm saying at first
So Action Love, put it in reverse

I'm just conversin' with you, person
This is just a conversation
I'm Special Ed, with the special presentation, hey
I like to play, so for me it's recreaton
It's not just a job, it's an adventure
If worse comes to worse, I've got your thirst quencher
But ya gotta buy it, dont' even try it
I don't rhyme for free, no matter how dry it gets
I collect my money in sets
One before the show and again when I jet
So I get mine, and I'm a get more
'Cause I'm financially secure and I'm sure
So i don't need your tips or advice
'cause I'm too nice for that, you rat
I can't stand mice, I'm like a cat, kinda frisky
Battling is risky business
You might acquire dizziness, just like whisky
Isn't this enough?
Oh, you think you're tough, cookie
I think you better call your bookie
'Cause you can bet your life, I'm gonna play you like hooky
On a Friday, this is my day
When I was through, I heard you say, "Why they dis me like that?"

I shoulda repent
Somebody shoulda said that Special Ed was the magnificent

I am the magnificent
I'm the magnificent, dynamite, super dope, outta sight
Special Ed with my trusty pal
Action Love, the run we shall
Continue to win, yet this is not a game
But I'm 'a play you if say you claim to be better
I hate rumors and I give tumors
And our jammies get Grammys
Yet I'm not an actor, it's just a factor that we're famous
Don't blame us for nothin'
Action Love is cuttin', I'm on the rhyme
Skin your teeth and it's your beef that I'll grind
Like a butcher, I'll put you on a table
And let my D.J. cut ya
But you're such a little sucker
I might not even touch ya
I betcha whatcha want is just attention
Your mother and your father shoulda used some prevention
Look at all the time and the money they spent
And now ya wanna die against I-the magnificent?
I am the magnificent!
I'm the magnificent with the sensational style
And I can go on and on for like a mile, a minute
I get in it like a car and drive

I've never been into rap or hip hop much, I've always been more of a metal/rock/punk guy myself. However, I recognize talent in artists such as Tupac, he has some really good stuff. I think that would qualify more as rap, no? I think The Roots is really good, too... Are they more hip hop maybe? Anyway, they rock. To hell with Ja Rule... blech, how can anyone stand that voice? Sounds like he has a permanent loogy stuck in there.

Anyway... I also like listening to the Ghetto Boys which I got from the Office Space sound track. Great stuff. 🙂 Die motherf*cker! 😛

genocide, yea, Jin joined RR

i too dont think it's a good pair up, but hey, watcha gonna do?

As for my friend, you prolly haven't heard him, his name is PT

OO, I thought u were sayin that Jin was your boy, and I agree, he doesn't fit RR too well, but hey, a record deal is a record deal.

Eminem, Nas, and DMX. Jay-Z is tight, but he CANNOT free-style. I heard he was free-stylin in some club in NYC and some kid got up on the stage and kept turnin everything Jay-z was saying back around on him, made him look like a little punk. Jay-z hands the kid 10grand and walks out of the club.

damn, i think jay z been out of freestylin game too long, you lose the skill after a while, it's almost like being an athlete, you can only get so good, then you get old

I think alot of people are either missing the point of the question or else are'nt really versed well enough in hiphop (wich imho is in fact different from rap)... most of the names i'm seeing here are really only commercial successes, very few of them have ever really achieved any true critical acclaim.

individuals:

guru
abstract rude
latryx
chali 2na
blackalicous

groups
tribe
roots
j5
la symphony (if only they were'nt christian...but, no matter...)

Roots is ok, some of their stuff is pretty good, some of their stuff sucks. Not spectacular either way.
