Trust me, I'm just ITCHIN to own a few firearms which I could build from kits, but the subsequent midnight slaughtering in bed I would recieve from the BATF isnt worth it. And if they dont decide to plug me full of holes, I'd be looking at 10 years minimum if I remember correctly.
Its NOT worth it to own one illegally. Your better off moving to a gun friendly state.

Anyways, check your local gunstore or shooting range. Those guys will know for sure. I dont seeing as I dont live in Jersey (That reason being one of them. Kansas is bad enough)

umm it's completly legal to build your own guy as long as you're compliant with the AWB rules (ie count the "evil factors" accordingly)

He was talking about the illegal kind. Not the fully legal builds of kits to approved BATF sem-auto status.

As far as the jersey thing goes, i had no idea the law was soo strict. I hope soccermoms there sleep safter now that instead of getting a .223 bushmaster you have a to get a 7mm elephant rifle...

Not what I want. the ONLY ones available are dummy guns which have had the reciever cut. In order to build it, you'd have to weld the reciever back together, then grind it down and tinker with it a bit. That would be highly illegal.
Otherwise, yes I know you can buy and build the kit guns. Alot of people do it quite often.

The people who own banned weapons may have purchased them prior to the law taking effect. I own 4 17 round Glock magazines I bought in 1994 before the Clinton ban took effect. It is not illegal to own them, just illegal for Glock to make and sell new ones except to Police departments.

Didn't California ban the private ownership of high capacity magazines completely?

Not that I'm aware of.

In VT, there are practically no gun laws. I can sell you a gun like I can sell you a shovel. Don't ask me, I don't own any. But it's absurd up here, you can walk down the street with two six-shooters and bandaleros of ammo covering your body and it's legal. What do you expect from the state that has no criminal threat law, so if you run into a cop, remember to threaten to murder him, his family and everybody he knows, because they can't do sh!t.

Ahh, the stories we hear in VT and people with guns. The best one was that a guy had an assault rifle in the back of his Jeep, the kind with a collapsable stock so he thought it was illegal. One day he wrecked his jeep in a field and threw his gun off into the bushes. Cops show up and deal with the accident. A couple weeks later, the cops call him up cuz they found his gun, he tells them he thought it was illegal. They tell him nope, and he can have it back.

VT is the only state where the cops will find your assault rifle in the bushes and call you up to give it back!

Cool, looks like vermont and indiana are gun friendly states where i can purchase assault rifles without being a resident? any other states?

Yes, they did. IIRC Massachusetts may have as well.
Magazines that were owned prior to the state AWB were grandfathered in, so you can own them if you had them in the state prior to the ban. You are no longer able to bring them into the state.

I live in VA where gun laws are almost nonexistent, anyway a got an ak47 last week at a gun show and wanted to take it out shooting this weekend. I can?t find anything saying they are illegal here but don?t want to get in trouble at the range. Does anyone know if they are legal in VA?

Anything with a barrel shorter than 4" is a Derringer. Very concealable, easy to slip past various security checks and such. Still a stupid law, but I bet that's why.

Everyone who's saying "come to my state, our gun laws rock": I got y'all beat hands down.

Come to Nevada; you can rent guns by the hour.

NRA-ILA link for VA

Appears to be completely legal in VA.

You mean you can rent them, and take them off the range? That just seems insane from a liability standpoint, and I can't imagine why a store would want to be in that business even if it were legal.

Everywhere I've ever lived allowed range rental, so I don't consider that a big deal.

By the hour? No strings attached?

Sure, there aren't any places in Nevada that will actually let you rent an AK and then walk out the door with it -- pretty much confined to shooting ranges -- but the law doesn't say there can't be places like that.

This intrigues me. I was under the impression gun rentals were a unique thing in Nevada.

Rental machineguns: There is nothing like burning up a small fortune in ammo while having the biggest grin achievable with your clothes on.

Nope. My range even stated that as part of the paperwork. You can rent your range time, buy your ammo, rent your range time and pistol. Basically any way you want to work it. Granted, we cant rent FA weapons, but their illegal in Kansas anyways. I *might* be able to find a range in Missouri to rent FA weapons but I havent checked.

I see you've never handled a Weather 416 Magnum. If ever a gun had nuts, this is the beast.
