Currently overclocked to ~2.8GHz and running 54ºC with very low CPU usage. For a while I was running overclocked to almost 3.3GHz with a bunch of voltage. Had some instability, checked load temperature and was over 85ºC :Q Yeah, yeah, I know that my mobo supposedly reports temps that are too high, but that was supposedly fixed with a BIOS update.
My system was a slightly overclocked 2.6C with my 120mm case fan and the Zalman HSF undervolted. Nice quiet and fast system. I built a system for my GF and decided to give her the 2.6C. I got myself the 2.4A as an "interim" processor to get me by for a while. Well, now I'm having to run the fans at full speed and my system is slower, plus without HyperThreading I can feel those CPU cycles that the bittorrents pull.

yeha i wwaz reelly pizzed off cuz my $124 PCu ran two hot at almosa 50% clok speed incrse i got riped off and wuld never buiy evil intel cr@p again
LOL, sure I hoped for better, but things are fine the way they are now. I was wanting to get another chip with HT and had gotten one from Fry's (3.2E OEM with disposable motherboard for $189) but the CPU was DOA so I returned it. Now, I'm thinking I'll just have another machine running my bittorrents and ventrilo server. That way, no need to worry about multitasking performance and I don't have to keep my main system powered up 24/7 with the three 7200RPM hard drives and overclocked CPU. I'll have an old Shuttle SV24 with one CPU doing the job. Haven't decided yet which chip to use... Tualatin 1.2 on adaptor or VIA C3 933... more CPU power or lower heat/power draw... In any case I have an XP120 heatsink here plus the parts for the Shuttle box. I think my "problems" are over.

Too bad about the 3.2E however - I love mine (especially compared to my previous PIII 500mhz 100mhz fsb)

Yeah, I would have happily kept that CPU, but I tried it on three different boards (with BIOSes that supported the chip) and all three would POST, but then gave errors or locked. My Asus P4P800 Deluxe would POST and then start beeping, and at every beep a line would be printed to the screen to the effect of:

I'm just wondering if we have anything even close to even a "small" (Student's T) sample size for comparing idle and load values of LGA775 Prescotts with the socket-478 Prescotts.
And of course, you have all this variation in computer case choices, number of fans, CPU coolers and motherboards.
Anyway, the reviews suggest that LGA775 mitigates some of the thermal problems. You'd want to test that hypothesis. Too easy to believe even reliable review sources, but too expensive to do your own testing and comparison.
