A potentially hot deal for Toshiba laptop owners.

A class action lawsuit has been settled.

Certain Toshiba Laptops models overheat and shut down.
Toshiba was sued and settled because of this problem.
If you have an affected model, you will receive $1,000 if you sent it in for repair withing a certain time period (but you have to return the laptop).
If you didn't send it in for repair, you get $500 from Toshiba, and can keep the laptop.

EVEN IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE MODELS AND DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT, YOU ARE DUE $500 FROM TOSHIBA. Read the settlement form.

This was sweet. I just received my letter on Saturday. I had so many problems with that laptop. I'm gonna go for the $1000. I'd rather pay some bills than gamble on another lemon.

What is the spec of this notebook? Did it have a desktop P4?

I know somebody who used his Toshiba outside in the summer and it just melted down. And no it wasn't too hot nor did he do anything wacky with it.

EDITed: Pentium-III desktop CPU. Talk about a stupid move.

Also read raving press review promising P-III desktop in a notebook is harmless:

Looks like you would have had to send in your laptop two times or more to qualify. Guess I won't be able to buy one for $500 of eBay and trade it for $1,000.

:(

wish my 1800 was on that list. ^^ Dosn't overheat.. but thats cause the cpu is like hard locked at some abysmal speed. (not sure how but it does change cpu speeds without changings the mhz it reports of the cpu and bus) and has the worlds most pathetic video chipset (which they actually lie about on their spec sheet, I was kinda hoping this was what the suit was for ;) )

Yep, I got some good stuff from the last one a few years ago. That was because of a fault in the floppy drive.

I think we've sent our 5005 back to Toshiba twice. Once for sure, for the hard drive. And then after it was out of warranty, it was overheating and crashing constantly. I eventually found a BIOS update that fixed the overheating. But the optical drive's also shot.

My optical drive was crap from day 1. I had sent mine back 3 times for various problems. I should get a bonus $500! :)

That's why your laptop isn't part of this settlement. :p

Yup. Looks like I am more of the victem of the "overheating" and some of the other problems. My SD card reader fails contantly, I've barely been able to burn a disc from the thing, and the system performance has gone to crap. The whole system melted down 2 years ago. XP SP1 used to break the sound, and Toshiba's only response to that was, "Don't install SP1" I'm a network admin, and I have taken care of the thing. *sigh* Too bad, it had a really nice set of features, and it looked quite stylish.

Why can't ThinkPads have problems like this? I need some free money! That's right, their service and support takes care of problems intstead of blowing customers off and forcing them to sue.
