Attention: Spelling lesson

As a spelling stickler, I've held my tongue long enough! Some of you are driving me crazy! It's so simple....perhaps you need a refresher course! Here's the most-abused words I find here in OT:

Loose: Like when you misplace something, you lose it....you don't loose it. You might tighten something that's loose.

Break: You break a window, you brake when approaching a red light.

Your: Your implies ownership. As in, "It's your car." The contraction of "you are" is you're. As in, "You're an idiot."



Ok, I'm ready for the purposely-misspelled replies now 😛

Because when people cannot spell, use correct grammar, or use improper punctuation, I find it very hard to take them more seriously than my 13 year-old sister, who might message me saying "OMG, lolz, u went to da store," or something as nonsensical as this.

I agree...I'm also a stickler for spelling and grammar. It's not that hard to write proper English.

I think "You're" going a bit too far with the spelling.

I mean comon, this is a Technical / OT / etc etc discussion board?!

Its not an online English Lesson in Spelling?!

So what if someone decides to shorten their sentences with a few numbers, or if they cant be bothered to put an apostrophe in...

At the end of the day they get the message across ya know.

Sure....

Their: plural possessive. As in, "It was their opinion".
There: Do I really need to explain this one? "Don't go there."
They're: contraction of "they are". As in, "They're all idiots."

Because there's a right way and a wrong way to spell. If you know the right way, there is absolutely no reason not to spell a word correctly.
Put it this way: If we are in a virtual conversation or debate here, where nobody can see or hear each other, then the only way you have to judge whether you're talking to a 6 year old or an intelligent (or dumbass) adult is by looking at spelling and grammar.

If I see where a certain person continually misspells words or uses crappy grammar, I'm probably going to think that either they are not particularly bright, or maybe very young.

Typos are different. It's easy to see whether a misspelled word is a typo or not. Typing "your" when you mean "you're" isn't a typo. Typing "repalce" when you meant "replace" is obviously a typo and not misspelled out of ignorance.

to - Suggesting present tense - We will go to the shops...
too - Can be used in past tense, or personal present tense - Me too...
two - Only stupidity can miss this one.... - The number two...2...two

Heh, this post is primarily about spelling, not grammar 😛 I figured examples might be more useful to the spelling-challenged.

Its not "too" tough to get the spelling right on your own examples though is it?
