I have 512megs DDR PC2100 Crucial memory (2x 256 Dimms). I have an Epox 8K7A with 1.4Ghz AMD T-Bird Athlon. I have had my built computer for almost a year now and am running Windows 98SE.

I used to run programs superbly during the preliminary months of computer usage. I could have multiple programs (Word, IE, etc.) running in the background and yet still be playing a 3D game simultaneously. I experienced very little performance issues. However, something strange has been happening lately.

As the day progresses, things start to act crazy like smeary graphics, fonts start changing, can't see parts of windows, etc. I notice this usaully happens after I have had a number of programs running in the background. I System Resources starts out with 88% free when I first boot up. But eventually, System Resources begin to be consumed. I even close out of every possible program, not only on the task bar, but using Ctrl+Alt+Delete. It doesn't work. It easily goes down to 8%, and warns me that things may not function properly. A few times I found my System Resources down to 1% free!

The only way for me to solve this problem is to reboot! Then I'm back to 88%! But this never used to happen to me! Why now???

Can someone please help me in this area?

Someone told me that what I needed to do was upgrade to WinXP. Well, I purchased WinXP Pro and will soon install it. But that doesn't satisfy me. I want to know how to manually fix this problem (pretending I never knew about XP).

Thanx.

Amazing that this thread dropped so rapidly without a response. Does anyone have the guts to answer this question? This is a forum to discuss technical issues and to get help.

An os like 98se does, in my experience, degrade in performance over time. It doesn't have to be a hardware issue at all. I tend to format my computer every 6 months, and notice a performance increase every time.

I had the same problem with Win ME and never could explain or fix the problem. When the new OS came out I jumped on it and the problem DID go away. I don't care how it went away, just glad it's gone. What I do know about this problem is that in Win 98 programs would use a portion of memory and when you stop using the program it would not release all of the memory it had control of, then eventually your memory would just about disappear. Kassa and other P2P sites were the worst to rob your computer of its memory capacity.

Have you ever tried using a ram defragging program? I find such a program very helpful with Win98SE.

There's lots of them available free for the trying....
