Dear fellow asians, as an asian and a fan of alcoholic beverages, I have been able to develop quite a tolerance and do not turn red that often when imbibing.

However, sometimes, when I'm introduced to new alcohol I do turn bright red. I've found a solution.

PEPCID AC. Take some of this a little while before you go drinking, and you will not turn red. But you will still get crunked.

Enjoy!

Interesting.....I suffer from the "Asian Blush" as well. I've heard from some friends that it actually has nothing to do with tolerance but rather the fact that many Asians lack a certain enzyme that breaks down alcohol.

I have a couple of Asian friends, 2 filipino, and 1 1/2 Chinese, all 3 of them get it. One of them told me the enzyme thing, which causes them to have low tolerances. One of them, the first time he ever drank, he got drunk off 1 beer.

I'll let them know and see what they do :)

defect in an aldehyde dehydrogenase i think. dont know why pepcid would help though.

ok i checked actually it's a 'slow' enzyme, not necessarily a defective one. causes a backlog of acetylaldehyde. i'm not sure but i doubt you could build up tolerance, or that 'new' types of alcohol would make you respond any different from the traditional stuff you drink. but who knows.

I've heard about the enzyme thing and I believe it. When I first started drinking I'd get drunk from 1 drink. Now I can drink a plenty and not get drunk! And not turn red either. I'm no doctor but something's going on.

Anyways, I have no idea why Pepcid AC would work, but it does. A friendly reminder to drink repsoponsiby.

Well, I'm not sure how Pepcid AC would help...Pepcid is an H2-receptor blocker, which reduces acid secretion in the stomach. This might be expected to have the OPPOSITE effect, because stomach acid slows gastric emptying and decreases absorption and peak levels of ethanol. So if it works for you...well....placebo effect. :)

Two things that theoretically should work (and people use):
1) Drink alcohol when you have lots of food in your stomach. This drastically delays stomach emptying, reduces peak ETOH level, and reduces the magnitude of intoxication (but bear in mind that all the alcohol gets absorbed anyway...albeit slower). You've heard this many times. It works.

2) Beef up on Thiamine (vitamin B1). This is the coenzyme for the aldehyde dehydrogenase reaction, which is slower in genetically susceptible Asians. In theory, higher doses of thiamine should increase reaction speed and offset some of the effects of a slower-reacting enzyme. Please do NOT overdose on B1, though -- I will not hold responsibility for your stupidity.

I say fight fire with fire......... drink more to build your tolerance. I'm a big asian so I usually don't feel it until 8 drinks (but I get red after 3). I find if I drink more regularly my tolerence goes way up.......... at my peak I could drink 18 Long Island Ice Teas :D

Cheers.

i get the blush sometimes, not sure what the determining factor is as to why i do or don't get it when i'm out getting my drink on...regardless of the blush, i still need 7 black label on the rocks to get a good buzz going....

Confirmed! I had a Pepcid AC before my buddy's 22nd birthday dinner. Afterwards we went to the bars where I proceeded to drink myself to a stupor. Having two friends that are bartenders at different bars in Davis didn't help either.

At any rate, I did not turn a shade of pink, yet still had major trouble holding my head up. I was caught bent over and peering into the bushes, hands on my knees, spitting. I was that sloppy guy that I didn't want to be.

I am now a Pepcid AC believer!
