You're not able to "apologize in a manner that suits YOUR needs?"

lol, get out of that business.

What could I have done to fix the problem best? Is there anything that can be done in that situation?

You basically did all you could short of firing the more asshole employees. You might consider it if this is how they generally treat customers face-to-face.

I'm 6'6". I'm already 100th percentile in height (so I'm taller than 99.9% of people). You get comments, mostly of the "how tall are you?" variety or jokes. I'm generally not tall enough that people stop and gawk, though. That would get old real quick. On the plus side, taller people statistically get paid and promoted more often...

My best friend is 6'11". He draws a lot of attention, even in NYC (where he lives). He told me a few weeks ago about walking across the street near his apartment and hearing a teenage girl in a car with her friends say something (very loudly) like "Oh my god, it's that huge guy!" You can imagine how getting reactions like that your entire life could be tiring. He's got some good stories about his trip to Japan, too...

It seems there is less and less class exhibited as a rule. What happened to your tall customer happens to folks with disfiguring facial scars, morbid obesity, speech impediments, missing limbs, etc.
Folks cry and whine about Politcial Correctness and sensitivity training, but if the average person had a reasonable clue about how his or her gawking or commenting can be disturbing to others, it would be unnecessary.
Look everybody right in the eye, acknowledge them and their needs promptly, be polite.
WTF is so fricking hard about that???

That man should never go to Asia. People will literally walk up to him and start taking pictures without his permission

That quote is not my words and you have no idea what business I'm in. I'm interested in your line of thinking here. What exactly do you think MY needs were? What business do you think that I'm in that I should "get out" because I didn't feel I my apology was as effective as I would have liked?

I think OP has a case of over-compensating for his embarassment. Calling the tall gentleman's height a "disability" = :confused:x100

I'd be upset too. Your staff has no class.
you are waaaaaay too sensitive. people are just trying to make small (tall?) talk with you. they aren't trying to be rude by asking if you play basketball.

When you hear it literally 20 times a day, EVERY DAY, in an elevator, it gets on your nerves. I'm also going to start carrying around a large retractable weather map so when they ask "So...how 'bout that weather?", I can unroll the map and say "Well...we have a low pressure boundary coming down from the north which is going to push this heat dome out of the area, bringing in some rain by late tomorrow, which will then clear by the PM hours...."

LOL- In Japan he should have rose out of the ocean and started trying to knock down buildings.

Teach people that they should show more restraint, when the munchkins and the giants come in. Sometimes you just see the lack of manners, some people are brought up without.

I'm 6'4" so Im not freakishly tall but tall enough to get comments all the time. I'm not bothered by it- but I am bothered by how everything from chairs/desks to sinks and cars are made to for short people :p

I was 6'1" in 6th grade, so I know how it is to get made fun of for being tall. I stayed that height until the summer between my freshman and sophomore year and stopping growing at 6'4". Still get comments, but not as many as I used to.

OP, the people you work with apparently were never taught any manners by their parents.

Uh...is this a parody? Can I get a link to the original thread?

You act like he's something of a beast or has two heads.

Classic lines:

"...making fun of someones disability..."

"I have an uncle that is tall."

haha! Too funny. Thanks, OP!

QFT, I got a paper cut on my head at Blockbuster video one time from a low hanging sign. I'm glad it didn't bleed as that would have been harder to play off like nothing happened.

I remember reading an SI article a long time ago regarding a tall basketball player who when asked "How's the weather up there?" would spit and say "It's raining"

edit: I am only about 5' 10". I actually wish I was a little taller. My wife is only a couple inches shorter than me so hopefully with all of the growth hormones in our daily food my 2 boys will be at least 6'.

20 times a day, every day? shens.

i can see how even once a day would wear on a person, but we all have to put up with repetitive stuff like that. it's not worth getting upset over.

I used to get a lot of height questions when I was younger, but I stopped growing either my freshman or sophomore year of high school at 6'2". I actually wouldn't mind being 6'4", in my area I'm fairly average in height.

I'm 5'7" and I try not to go out of the house.
Well, that's not exactly true, but people do tell me I look like an elf. That is, until they taste the steel of my blade!!

I'm a mere ~192 cm tall, I guess that's about 6'4" or some such.
I generally don't get any comments at all about my height, but I guess maybe that's because I don't look all that tall since I'm pretty damn wide across the shoulders as well.
My brother is 190 or something, slightly shorter anyways, but he does look taller cause he's skinny.
Or maybe people are just taller on average in Sweden or something, so I don't stick out much :p

Anyways, my mother taught me at a fairly young age that starring, pointing, etc at people is rude.
Maybe you should call the mothers of your employees and tell them that they suck at parenting?

I'm in an elevator a good 50 times a day (stupid multifloor building), and we have a Dr.'s office on the second floor that gets about 100 elderly visitors a day. So yeah...20 times might be high, but not unheard of. I'm proud of being tall (I've been the hero of a few dozen little girls by saving their ballons from the ceiling of Chucky Cheese :) ), but hearing about it every day gets old, just like weather conversations.

I bet I can guess the "good humored comment about his height" the OP's sister made. . .
"So, how's the weather up there?"
I bet he's never heard that one before.

Hehe. That's what makes the OP hilarious. He's acting as though someone walked into the store with an arm growing out of his eye socket.
