Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and now Christianity!

A little background, I was born in India to two very hindu parents. Moved here (Georgia) when I was 2 so I kinda lost the accent then :D. I was raised as a hindu but never really believed in it. I did however attend something called Balvihar kinda like sunday school, didn't really do it for me. I'm not looking for religion but I like seeing what people believe in and why they believe in it so much. This is how I'm going to rank order these religions:
  1. Buddhism
  2. Hinduism
  3. Islam and Christianity (Tie)

I attended Sunday-school then mass (sp?) at a Southern Baptist church with a friend of mine, this religion to me seems WAY to far fetched for me. Plus the whole gospel / contemporary band thing I HATED! I understand that Christianity is not just about going to church but the whole Jesus just doesn't work. I also didn't like how everything is regulated the reason I like temple is that I can walk in (even during a service) pray and leave. From the people I talked to, no one really does that most of them go to mass. I did like how personable the pastor was, Hindu priest need to take after this.

Now next on my list:
  • Catholic Church
  • Jewish Synagogue

any suggestions to add to my list?

Also I am sorry if I offended someone. Just wanted to say what I felt.

Cliffs:
  1. Went to church
  2. Didn't enjoy it
  3. Now looking for more religions

So

Let me just throw what approximately half of ATOT is thinking...

Why bother? You already know the truth:

this religion to me seems WAY to far fetched for me.

They're all just as preposterous, and it's especially obvious if you weren't raised with it.

Dude, don't draw any conclusions about Christianity from attending a Baptist church in the deep South.

Attending different religious churches is very interesting I think and I've done it many times. Even went to a Mormon temple once.

Oh yeah I should take part in that! I was invited to some sort of formal dance event there when I was high school

Judging by my sig, my comments are probably not needed. But, whatever!

It's all a farce. Don't even waste your time and MONEY.

Even worse. I'm just saying, there are a dozen major Christian sects/denominations and some of them are starkly different.

The thing that attracts me to catholic church is that they seem to have traditions, rituals, and very ceremonial mass.
What denominations would you recommend? I eventually want to get around to all of them, I'm 19 I have plenty of time!

The thing is that I don't believe that people who believe in Jesus are stupid. I think I was kinda shocked. I find it odd that some of my closest friends who i'v know for the longest time believe in it. They just don't seem like the type.

Its not so much the denomination or church itself as the culture of the community it is in. The church must appeal to the locals. And in some places, the locals are really scary or icky, so too goes the church. You know?

There is a non-denominational church in Michigan I would recommend. Couldn't really recommend anything near you.

Find a Roman Catholic Church and attend. Very structured. What I think is the most pure of the Christian religions.

And the kind of religion that Christ railed against - full of man-made traditions, rituals, laws, tests of faith, and zealously-protected aristocratic ecclesiastical polity with zero Biblical basis, at least in the New Testament (e.g. priests being considered Holy, Divine, or infallible, rather than God).

Except for them copying all the old religions to make it easier to convert people and therefor having very little to do with actual Christianity.

I'm not a Christian myself, but from the moment I started looking into all different world religions I found that the Catholic Church has probably strayed the furthest from their origins, only to be able to get more members.

'Hmm, those people want to pray to all kinds of old gods, but we want them to only worship ours... Let's invent saints for them to pray to instead! We don't call it worshipping as to not break the commandment about that!'
'Hmm, they also want an image of the one they worship but our book forbids that...I know, let's make statues of those saints instead!'
'You need to live a humble life, and therefor need to give us lots of money so we in Rome (well, Vatican city now) can have a rich life instead!'

I'm a Catholic and will say it will heavily depend on where you go. For instance, the priest on a school campus is probably going to be a little bit more laid back than at the church in some neighborhood full of senior citizens. I'm guessing thats true for most religions though.

and the most boring

I dunno, I'm a despicable heathen who went to Mass with a Catholic ex-gf of mine once and I actually thought it was sort of interesting to go once. I certainly wouldn't make a habit of it, but the Catholics do put on a good show. Much better than the horrible mega-church style, Jesus meets Wal-Mart crap you get at a lot of non-denominational Protestant services.

BTW, attend an Eastern Orthodox service if you want to see something very old-school.
