My take? Absolutely pathetic. If I were the kid's parent, that'd be the end of their attendance in that school. Honestly, can the school's administration be that blind to basic reality?

FINDLAY, Ohio - A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."


Principal: Family 'disingenuous'?
England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.

"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.

"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said.

This is a small detail but, wouldn't his girlfriend be taking him to her public school prom? The text of the report seems pretty sexist.

Well, rock music and dancing are "immoral." Seems like that area is about, oh, 50 years behind the times.

My kid wouldn't be going to a fundamentalist Baptist school anyways, so... I have no idea why the kid's parents are surprised or upset if they are sending him to a school with these ridiculous rules.

Maybe the principal should let God decide what is pleasing to God; and the school committee should go and unbunch their panties.

That is a bit hardcore, but it is a private school. I attended a private Baptist university for a semester, it was not nearly as strict. It was not much different than my current public university other than they encouraged church attendance, kicked non-student protesters (of any sort) out for trespassing on private property and there were no anti-religion posters / books on display.

The kid should take to heart the important lesson that religious fundamentalists are fucked up.
 
Eh, hopefully this will motivate the parents to pull him out of that school and put him in a public school or something. Family seems to have their heads on straight, at least. The school is embarking on a losing battle, hopefully they don't get more press than they deserve.

LOL, ahhhh Baptists... always good for an incredulous "wtf?" I can see them being authoritarian wackos concerning their own lame curriculum, and over functions that occur on their campus using their resources. But threatening a student for an event that they have no connection to, a prom that's taking place at a different school...yep, nice folks those Baptists. While I feel bad for the kid, it's stuff like this that really advertises the idiocy of religious institutions like this one. I'm sure many students and their families will give pause to reconsider "schools" like this.

Another noteworthy example of dogma making the USA look positively Saudi.

The problem is, with those kinds of influence....the kids can't be indoctrinated to keep the coffers being filled by the next generation. We can't have people that think for themselves because then they might see what a crock of shit this church and many like it truly are.

Now, to those that are going to need to see their orthopedic surgeon from the knee injury they just received from my statement...I'm not saying ALL churches or religions are like this. But if you are too blind to see that there are some very real examples of manipulative, mind controlling, power hungry idiots running some sects....you are probably part of one and I'm probably going to get a good laugh realizing that I offended you.
 
Sucks for the kid since he didn't choose to go to that school, it was his idiotic parents. You put your kid in a cult school and then whine when the cult wants to enforce their rules? Geez.

He could of done something about it. I was forced to go to catholic grade school. Even after I stopped believing and wanted to go to public school. When it came time for high school my parents wanted to send me to an all boys catholic school. I told them if they sent me there I would do everything in my power to get expelled the first day. That they would be wasting there money and I didn't care if they grounded me for the rest of high school. It worked no cult school and no grounding.
