ATTBI is going to start charging for extra IPs..

Bah.. This sucks. :disgust:

Just got this email..

Dear AT&T Broadband Internet Customer,

AT&T Broadband offers customers the ability to network multiple computers in their home through our Multiple IP Service. As a result of recent changes made to the AT&T Broadband Internet network, some customers may be currently receiving additional IP addresses without subscribing to our Multiple IP service. If you are such a customer and would like to continue receiving additional IP addresses, you will need to subscribe to the Multiple IP Service by July 8, 2002 in order to avoid disruption of service. The charge is $4.95 for each additional IP address. Regardless of your decision to subscribe to this service, your AT&T Broadband Internet Service to your primary computer will not be affected.

To subscribe to the AT&T Broadband Multiple IP service, simply send an e-mail to customer.care@broadband.att.com with the word SUBSCRIBE and the number of additional IPs you would like to receive in the subject line (ex. Subscribe-1 to receive 1 additional IP).

Our goal is to provide you with the best high-speed cable Internet service available, and we are confident that your choice of AT&T Broadband Internet continues to be the best value in the market today. We know you have a choice of service providers, and all of us at AT&T Broadband value your business.

Sincerely,

AT&T Broadband

:frown:

you are mad because ATT made a mistake and accidently allowed people to get more IPs?

That is what i get from this:

I would say that they chose their wording very carefully when they wrote that. There was never a "Multiple IP Service" before, you just plugged your other puter in, and you were good to go. It was like this before they even switched to ATTBI.

Yeah, screw them. Get a router.

Don't forget to try a TV on the line to see if you get $12 basic cable for free. (I they can't turn off the TV signal, that's their own problem, IMO.)

Mwa ha ha ha ha!

no no no no no

Nobody's supposed to be getting multiple IP's without paying for them. That's a regional software problem in Portland that will be officially fixed. 🙂 Everyone, reguardless, should be paying an extra $5 per IP.

We already signed up for the 12$ basic cable, so..... lol

i concur. i dunno about your cable modem, but mine only has one outgoing jack. you have to get a router to get multiple computers on there, and then you're not using another IP.

in other recent news, router sales spike as consumers finally get a clue.

If I were a customer, I wouldn't care. I'd be getting a service for free and wouldn't be complaining that I was taking advantage of the service cuz some disgruntled tech might do something bad 😉 😛

j/k

nik (would actually call and complain 😛)

There was? I never saw or heard anything about it. Never saw anything regarding multiple IPs in the contract. Like I said, it's been like this since the day I got it.. (which was November of last year)

cable modem > switch > other computers..

My brother, and a couple people I know that have ATTBI do the same thing....

A router, or switch, is different than a hub. If you get a hub, connect the modem to it, and connect the computers to the hub, only one computer will get a connection. That's why AT&T sells multiple IP's. In all reality, it doesn't make sense to buy more IP's since spending a little extra gets you unlimited internal IP's from the router, and all the traffic goes out through one AT&T IP on the AT&T network.

Even when we were with @Home, we required payment extra per month ($5 or so) for extra IP's. That's the way it's always been.

Just to clarify, I don't have a hub, or a router.. I have a 5 port D-Link switch. Cable modem goes into uplink(port1), and then I can plug 4 more computers in.. and the way it is right now, each would get their own IP..

I understand, I just think it's funny.. I thought that was the way it was supposed to be.. lol.. because it worked for me, and "everybody" else seemed to be doing it.. lol.. I would have assumed that if it wasn't supposed to be like that, it wouldn't have worked.. so it's not really my fault, lol..

Another question.. In the email, it says your primary computer won't lose connection.. How can they tell which computer is your primary computer? 😕

The only way they can tell that is by what's on record of the MAC address. If none of the computers match, then it goes by which ever gets the connection first. If you reboot all four, whichever starts up first is the primary. If you shut down all of them (or disconnect them from the network) and connect a brand new computer right out of the box, that's your primary.

And, yes, there are quite a few out there who use a switch. It's the smart thing to do.

I?m a fscknut? OK, but you?re a know nothing know-it-all, kid.

This is funny, because I've got RoadRunner-Time Warner. They spliced the cable and hooked the damn TV up for me and told me that getting free basic cable was no problem. You see, RoadRunner and Time Warner just accept the fact that they can't separate the TV signal from the broadband signal, and don't get down on the fact that people are going to do what they're going to do. Good policy, if you ask me, and a good example for AT&T BI to follow.

In another thread, you were just complaining about the execs thinking with their pocketbooks instead of their heads. But what are they doing here? Thinking with their pocketbooks. They?re alienating their customers who do what they?re going to do in their homes with a wire that they pay money every month to have in their homes. If they don?t want to give away cable TV, they need to turn off the cable TV!

Yes, they should turn off the cable TV. Ah, but that would require extensive, and expensive, system-wide equipment upgrades. Oh, I know! Let?s prosecute! Certainly, keeping a bunch of auditors and legal types busy and pissing off paying customers one by one must be cheaper than upgrading infrastructure! </sarcasm>

Strange... I was one of the first @Home subscribers inside the city of Portland and, AFAIK you always had to pay extra to use additional IPs unless you used a router.
The REAL news here is that ATTBI is going to be cracking down more and more on router use. Believe it or not, they consider it "theft of service" (says so right in their TOS). :|

You're encouraging someone to do something on a network that considers that something illegal.

Even though they're selling them and saying that they're allowed? I think I might go back and re-read the TOS for clarity if I were you... that seems awefully strange. I'm gonna ask somebody around here, though. Post the snippet if you find it...

:Q

I don't think they can tell when someone is using a router.. It's all the same to them.. data in, data out.. It's after it comes in that the router decides where it goes. (?)

that's true, but it's really irrelevant what the company thinks should be illegal. haven't seen a court ruling on this yet though.

You're encouraging someone to do something on a network that considers that something illegal. Wait, even better... RR GIVES you that cable TV along with your internet service (apparently). Since RR is a subsidiary of AT&T, I highly doubt that you're anything but a crack smoking liar. But that's up to you. AT&T says that you get what you pay for. If you pay for an internet connection, you don't get cable TV. Period.

I can. I'm thinking of a guy just offhand who spent 15 months in jail for wiring several of his neighbors houses with it as well.
