you are on rollerskates??? Are you at least on ceramic wheels? Just kick/punch the dog. Carry a foot long stick if you must.
The wheels are urethane, the big 70mm Kryptonics. Yeah, I could kick with it, but the skates are a bit on the heavy side and it would be hard to maneuver to get an accurate shot at an agile dog. Pepper spray might be a real good idea. I'm reading on in the thread. Thanks to everybody for the input!

That's a tough call. Obviously the dog wasn't intending to hurt you seriously, it seems it was protecting its property. If you do in fact take the same route, I'd say pepper spray would probably be more effective in the same situation than a small pocket knife. As for calling animal control, I wouldn't, but I can see why a reasonable person might. If you see the dog acting aggressively without the owner around again, then I'd certainly be more inclined to shoot them a ring.

Sounds like a reasoned approach. Thanks!

Yeah, I don't care if I look funny. In fact, if I look to people I encounter like I'm not quite in control I figure they'll give me a wide berth and I'll be safer therefore. Safety is paramount. I hate being injured and don't want to spend the next N months in a cast. You can laugh, I don't care.

Just call Animal Control. Describe the incident, dog and location. If the dog is re-contained, they'll do a quick search of nearby yards for any dogs fitting the description, and note it for future incidents. Had you called Animal Control immediately after the attack (from some sort of safe place), they probably would have dispatched, met and searched with you. A lot of cities/counties have policy to automatically take the dog away from the owner in bite cases, only releasing the animal after a court appearance. Or, after a certain number of complaints or evidenced cases, the dog gets put down.

I probably would have done just this if it were not for the fact that I had a noon engagement and wanted to get in my workout before it. I'll call them now.

I just called Animal Care Services of Berkeley and she asked me if my skin "was broken." I replied "no" and she said in this circumstance their policy is this:

If I see the dog out there again (presumably unleashed) I should call them ASAP (bring my cell phone with me) and they will go out immediately and ascertain whose dog it is and act accordingly. They have one person covering 2 cities and don't have the resources to go out now and investigate this. Meantime, hey, can someone recommend where I can get a canister of pepper spray cheap? Is pepper spray for dogs different than that for people? I've seen the latter for sale (cheap), but can't remember where (or when).

You know, this crossed my mind. I have a machete, but I can't see myself skating down the street wielding a machete. 🙂

They sell pepper spray for dogs. Given your history with dogs, I'd pick some up.

This is different from pepper spray for people? Where can I get it? Thanks.

Definitely call the police, that kind of thing has to be stopped. If you were anywhere but cali I'd suggest you consider a weapon for self-defense, but if you live in the Republik you're just completely screwed in that regard.

Last time a dog bit me I stuck my fingers in its eyes and snapped its neck. Owner was just a hundred feet or so away playing catch with it but the stupid thing put a huge gash in my leg that I had to get stitched up, would've been worse had I not stopped it. Idiot had the gall to get mad at me.

OK, so on your advice I just called the Berkeley Police, and was told that whatever Animal Services says to do, is what it is and they don't want to get involved. So, as it stands if I see the dog out there again, I'll call them (hopefully I won't be attacked again). I asked the woman if she knows where I can get pepper spray for dogs and she said she doesn't really know. 😕

Pepper spray works way better on animals then humans. I actually wouldn't recommend to even bother carrying it for self defense against people, but in your situation it would be a good fit.

Call a few local firearm stores, they will definitely know the laws and have it for sale if it's legal in your area.

When and if you do pick up a can, make sure you figure out how to friggen use it before you actually carry it. It's useless if you can't get it to spray.

Where in Berkeley was this? I used to live there and go running all around it. Sucks what happened. I always carry a cell phone just in case. Would have been nice if you could have gotten animal control/police there at the time and be lucky enough to find the asshat owner.

i've heard that dogs pretty much universally understand the command: "NO!"

when i go for a run around my neighboorhood and a dog runs after me, i'll just stop and tell it "no" until it backs off. unless it's one of the dogs i know, then i might just let it follow me along, then they'll run back on their own.

You may have to leave Berzerkely to get pepper spray, but I'm sure you could find it in Haywierd or Castro Valley, or even Oaktown.

Gun stores, sporting goods stores, etc. should have it...maybe even Wally World's sporting goods department.

This was on McGee (i.e. ~3 blocks west of Martin Luther King Jr. Way) one block north or Dwight Way. I used to run all over Berkeley too until I hurt that same foot (which I had surgery on 3 years ago last Tuesday). The dog was highly uncooperative and I just wanted to get the hell away from there in one piece. I didn't have the time to deal with it afterward yesterday. IMO it sucks how territorial dogs are.

Cool. I've been planning to visit a large sporting goods store in El Ceritto/Richmond border area imminently anyway (the one on San Pablo Ave.), and will ask about it. Thanks.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that!

Posting in an inhumane animal torture thread. You're suppose get on your knees, bend over and let the dog do whatever it wants to you to appease the animal lovers.

The dog was trying to tell you something, rollerskating went out in the 80's.

The dog was doing nothing of the sort. Anyway, I'm not trying to be trendy. I enjoy my rollerskating. Nobody (except you here) has ever told me anything like that. Scores of people have given me positive feedback on my skates and skating.

i  my rollerblades.

You reminded me of a song
Brand new key

I skate better than her, got nicer skates too.
