That whole area of the world is such a beautiful place. Too bad religion has too much of an influence on their societies.

They have a lot of firepower but it's useless if it isn't on you.

I read there was an ongoing gun battle an hour after the blast. I have to question if those Marines were given some sort of chicken sh!t order that they can't be walking around with rifles or if they have rifles they can't have ammo etc etc.

Diplomats can give orders like that. It happened in Beirut and we all know what happend there.

Since many of those who are injured or killed will most likely be innocent people who don't actually make or apply policy I have to disagree with this statement made in this thread.

I agree with it considering some people but it has no place here at this time.

Ignore him he is just anti Bush, he actually stated before the US should leave Iraq and "turn the keys back over to Saddam".

Would like to hear your take on Singapore though Michael, looks great from afar but not sure if the stringent laws/reduced rights are worth it IMO.
 
Alistar7 - Other than being a little on the hot and humid side, Singapore has been very good to live in so far. I haven't noticed any of my rights being taken away and, as a guest here, it would have to be really large before I complained. The locals all seem to like it, and not just the business people I generally deal with.

Kerry wouldn't have done much different, while I support your right to free speech, I can't help but wonder how you can bear to live in this country & pay taxes to support the US policies?

Nice to see you have hope and Optimism but the Radical Religious Right has an Agenda and they are not going to let go of the power they have achieved and looking to achieve a whole lot more.



 
I have been to the country and though it has its beauty, the military forces suck. They do not wish to fight, they are not fulley backed by their own country. As for the Marines being armed and firing back. With Saudi Arabia, our SOFA agreement with them would determine what action can be taken by the Marines.
I dont think anyone ever though that Saudi, UAE and other ajoining countrys are really on our side?
 
The US, as a superpower, is nearing her twilight.

1. We are indebted beyond any reasonable country would tolerate. Only our current clout and military power keeps us from defaulting on loans.
2. We are terribly dependant on oil. With the coming oil peak (circa 2008), the US economy will suffer massive setbacks (along with major economies around the world, but we will be hurt worst).
3. We have an incompetant administration (or an ingeniously smart one) that either refuses to recognize the problem, or is all too aware of the problem. With Dick Cheney as VP, I can say he knows about the production peak of oil. Foreign policy (Carter Doctrine) has been based upon easy + cheap fuel for the last 30 years. That era is about to close.
4. We have a very indepted and very consumerist cultures. One or the other will kill us. Heart attack or cancer, take your poison.
5. We have becoming increasing the pariah of the globe, with nearly every major region having a huge support in the populations against the US.
6. We are overstretched as a military and will require a draft for any further incursions, which seem likely. March 2005 is the date I am putting down for either a start of a war on Iran or a military draft as a precursor to a fight against Iran. Iran has plans to allow dual sales of oil in euros and dollars in March 2005.
7. We have all the weaknesses of an empire and none of the strengths.

As I see it, the era of superpowers is coming to an end. The US can not stay atop the heap for much longer without irreperable harm to herself.

If the US economy crashes the US will create a hot war somewhere (the Ukraine (and/or a bunch of former Soviet satellites), Iran, NK... there are any number of places that could turn hot quickly) to deflect the domestic heat by creating a foreign policy emergency (which requires a draft and a war time economy which takes care of the unemployed and allows hard measures against dissidents - new Gitmo GULAG camps) and focus the population on another problem. In effect this would make WWIV a hot war. War inflation is easy to blame on foreign evildoers instead of failed White House policies. Twice before Imperialism has led to hot world wars. The third one was cold but there is a risk there will be a fourth one and that this (likely last) one will be hot.

It is a question of when, not if. Infinite growth can not happen indefinately in a finite world. Ask any person with cancer, or try growing bacteria in a culture. Both of them hit a point in which further growth is precluded by limits in the environment (blood supply/nutrient availability). We are arrogant (as a species not a country) to think that we are freed from the laws of physics, biology, and chemistry.
