attaching the fan and heatsink of a duron- what about this?

No do NOT remove them. They are there to balance the heatsink on the chip. If your heatsink has feet remove those feet.

In fact, its a very BAD idea to remove those thingies (technical term). The thingies serve the purpose of stabalizing the HSF anf also taking some of the pressure off the core. If you take them off you're taking several big risks. Your HSF has a higher chance of being mounted at an angle, which may not only fry your CPU by providing inadequate contact, but it may also crack or chip the CPU by putting too much force on one side of the core. Another thing that might happen is that you might just crush the core, which is as bad as it sounds.
