ATT Uverse hardware & provider

My brother and his family are using ATT for their broad band cable provider. They have the VP1225 cable modem, and Arris NVG589 Router. He bought a Airport Time Capsule 3TB storage wifi router thing. Does ATT require their hardware for use or can they buy a better modem, and then use the Airport Time Capsule wifi device? I think 99% of their devices are wifi.

Is there a web GUI for either the Arris NVG589 Router, or Airport Time Capsule, like my Asus Router has?

So if they didn't have the ATT TV stuff they could buy a different modem and then use the Airport Time Capsule? Or it's an all or nothing deal with the ATT hardware?

Yeah, the DSL modem can be bought pretty much anywhere, but, IIRC, once uverse is installed, it isn't as simple as unplugging that and using a DSL modem anymore, since they did some changes outside to the service box.
