Radio Shack has the Accurian 16-3499 ATSC Tuner on clearance for $69.97 ( In Store ONLY - Not Avail Online ) I was able to get 2 units.
It has HDMI, Component RGB, S-Video, and Composite-Video outputs.
I haven't yet tried it via HDMI, but the Component out works fine. ( does not come with HDMI Cable ) The box also does a very good job of "down-converting" to regular NTSC in case you want to use it on an old TV set. I tried it on a 10+ year old 20" Sony. I used a $20 RCA Indoor Antenna with it and was able to lock in about a dozen stations ( Westchester, NY area ) Good hunting!

If you run a digital cable box or DirecTV receiver through this, will it decode the HD channels for you, or is this for OTA use?

I bought one of these last year, and it was almost sold out already. Good luck finding a store that still has one, but if you do, that's hot.

This is not a bad tuner. The remote sucks but I have it in my jp1 remote and fixed that problem. I took it to my dads house to plug into his plasma. I had to show him what real tv looked like. ;) He was raving at how good his picture was. I hooked it up and had him come look at it. He looked and said yea it is a good picture. I flipped back to the cable input so he could see that then he said OH that is a good picture. Probobly had to be there. It looked excellent on his plasma.

For $69 it is a great tuner! I paid $89 for mine and had to drive an hour to get it. All the close ones were sold out back in September. As I recall in the above mentioned link some people found a large stock in the chicago area. definately ymmv.

One thing did strike me odd. When I went into the store to buy it the csr told me as he boxed it up, that they just got the unit in like 2 weeks before. I figured it was just clear the store stock and that was it. The website said instore only. It is still up on radio shack site. Try the locator.

I don't have a hdtv yet but I purchased this when it was around $100 just to see what hdtv channels I could receive. Tested it on my friends hdtv and he when out and bought one that night. As others have said the IR beam on the remote is weak but that's the only negative thing I can say about this unit. Great deal at $70!!!

His tv doesn't have a built in hdtv tuner and he is technology challenged. He has the cash to buy whatever he wants but doesn't know what is available. I guess the csr at best buy got his sale in and left it at that. ;)

I don't know what to say about picture being darker. I use a dvd to setup the colors and I don't feel it is any darker than my regular tv. What I do know is that I wouldn't give up my tv for a plasma. I would rather have an LCD myself. His plasma is just over a year old and in the top corner there is a rectangle box that has the channel number in it. That being said you know that isn't displayed all the time. Well it is already getting burn in on that spot of the tv. I did a lot of research on AVSforums and decided to buy my 32" WEGA instead.

I wish I could find another one of these I would pick it up for the old mans plasma. I don't know why he doesn't just call time warner cable and get it through them.

Oh well great deal to all that find one.

Sounds like your pop does a LOT of channel surfing! I just checked my Panasonic plasma that I've had for exactly 4 years now, and not even the slightest burn-in. And believe me, we've logged many many hours on it too.

Actually no he doesn't. This is in his bedroom first off. Second he has a cable box feeding a video input so he doesn't change the channel on the tv at all. Actually to think about it, it is kind of mysterious. He has the standard vcr and dvd hooked up also but I don't think they use them very often.

The talk on AVS forums say the panny is one of the best of the bunch as far as burn in not being a problem. Looks like you made a good choice.

i bought one used off a guy on these forums since I couldnt find one and it works great..

I was using an old AM antenna from an old receiver and jabbing it into the coax and actually got a semi-decent signal in most cases. Nice!
