Well it must be released somewhere because it is for sale all over the net from links right from Linux.org, $5.00 for the 3 disk set.

Things can be licensed differently for different people.

Just because it has a copyright does not remove the GPL licience, I am sure you are aware of that.

Yes yes yes, but does the actual iso layout constitute a derivitive work? If so, then it must be GPLed, but since kernel modules aren't necessarily a derivitive work, I'm guessing that an iso layout isn't either. 😉

If it isn't it does not have to fall under the GPL. The files on the disk are GPLed, and I'm not saying that someone can take away the right to distribute those. I'm just saying this could be a situation similar to SuSE, who does not distribute ISOs, but you can make your own. And then after they make the official release to the public (instead of retailers and members or whatever), they change the license to allow redistribution to everyone.

There is most likely no issues involved with distributing the iso. And I'm not trying to argue, or berate, or make anyone feel bad. Just discuss. It's one of those licensing issues I find interesting. I don't want to tell anyone to stop distributing it, and don't want to cause any trouble. I think the whole copyright licensing thing is intrigueing. I'd consider taking a class at a college or something on it, if it didn't mean hanging out with potential lawyers. 😛

Anyway I am extremely gratefull for the opportunity to get the distro, I have it up and running and it is pretty nice, a lot better than 9.2 that is for sure.

and this serves as a bump also

I won't be downloading it, but I'm glad the thread is here. 🙂

Maybe we could setup an AT Free software BitTorrent repository or something.

Think I could get 10.0 Offical from you along with some of those vidoes? Do you know of any good linux nub sites? Thanks

edit: if anyone has a real fast UL/DL and willing to move the ISO's for me I can get mandrake 10 official up
If you have telnet access to the server, you could transfer it directly frm the remote ftp site to your server. That would be much faster, as it would cut out the middleman computer. PM me if you have telnet access but need help doing this.

I have ssh, but the remote site had no ftp and downloaded through a php link that wget wouldn't follow.

When will it be back again, i am looking to get Mandrake 10...

feel free to PM if you still want it and I'll give you a UN/PW

man, i don't want to patch this community download with a 1.5 gig patch file next month. i'd rather just download the official now. i have a pretty fast T3 hookup. anyone help me? :-/

Any chance of getting you to pick up the ISO's for Mandrake Linux 10.0 for AMD 64 ? I'm DYING to get the 64 bit version on my freshly built box!

Anyone else got these and want to fire up the BitTorrent this weekend ?
(at work now and going to a show after work tonight)

Yarrow is just the name of that particular release. Each distribution nicknames their releases in addition to giving them an official number.

fedora core 1 = yarrow
there was a version of mandrake called helium
debian had woody and sarge
redhat had one called shrike

all just from memory off the top of my head here.

Just a heads up we used lots o' BW so far, so we're gonna hold off on giving the PW out till the end of the month rolls closer, and than we will open it up again.

Darn....I guess I'll have to wait to get the Mandrake 10 Official. I've tried the Mandrake 10 AMD64 RC1 version, but some of the programs don't run in 64-bit currently. I'll have to wait until more compatible programs are out until I go 64-bit. I'm pretty newbish at linux, but if something won't run, it just won't run, like wine.

how about making our own linux distribution?

Actually that is not a bad idea at all, the problem is settling which packaging system, which packages to, who wants to create them and how is the install going to work.

Most people would probably like something like feodoras or Mandrakes install, i am closer to a FreeBSD/Slackware install program myself (but would not object to something resembling Net/OpenBSD either)

it's was just an idea, but if anyone really wants to start this perhaps we can use linuxfromscratch.org as a basis and go from there. perhaps a modified gentoo whereby the programs that need the most speed optimizations get compiled on the user's computer and other things (e.g. bash, cron) come as binaries.

as for package management, i really like the openbsd method.

Dang!! Just as I find this thread and am waiting for a painfully slow torrent link, my hopes are dashed. And finding a fast Mandrake morror to ftp it the hard way is nigh-on impossible. Not to mention the 10gb it takes to get that's on 4 isos.

Ah well. I did PM youm tho.

Cheers.

Samfrimp.
