There is a USB and HDMI port on the phone itself.

So my guess is you can make your own laptop dock if you really wanted to.
Early adapters always get fleeced though, probably dock prices will fall once that demand subsides. Plus you have to consider that the laptop dock is probably targeted towards business users, who would have less of a problem paying $500 for it.

The dock is probably just a small, low resolution display that accepts an HDMI input, a keyboard, and has USB power for the phone. Making a 3rd party dock would be simple. Just get a small, low resolution display with HDMI, a USB keyboard, and a USB battery. I guess we'll have to wait and see if there's some sort of encryption going on for the USB keyboard that wouldn't allow third parties, but really doubt that's the case.
