"On Thursday, press secretary Robert Gibbs affirmed the president's commitment to banning assault weapons, and with them those high-capacity-killing magazines."

I like how their definition of what an assault weapon is, is completely skewed to anything scary looking. Also, those "high capacity killing magazines" are what foiled the Tuscon shooter, with the 2nd one jamming. Oh well, lets not let facts get in the way of knee-jerk bannings.

I doubt any bill will get through the House, but dont hesitate to get what you want before they are gone.

Fearful little boy, aren't you...

If we weren't there'd probably be a handgun ban by now, and manual-action folding knives that require one hand to open wold be considered switchblades.

That said, with the Republicans in control of the house I'm not concerned about a renewed assault weapons ban any time soon. That and I can't find any citation or reference for the claim that Gates confirmed anything. Just Sarah Brady spouting her rhetoric. As usual.

Did you read the article?

It's not an article - it's an opinion piece...

"When he ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004, Obama said it was a “scandal” that President George W. Bush was allowing the assault weapons ban to expire without pushing for its renewal. And as a presidential candidate, he promised to push to reinstate the ban. After the election he said it would be difficult to do."

“The president, again, since I have been with him in 2004, has supported the assault weapons ban. And we continue to do so,” Gibbs said. “And I think we all strive, regardless of party, to ensure that we’re doing everything we can to reduce violence. We’ll have an opportunity to evaluate some of the other proposals.”

The whole "assult weapon" thing is emotional government speak.

According to BATF, the top 10 guns used in all crimes (last report 2000) is:

1. Smith and Wesson .38 revolver
2. Ruger 9 mm semiautomatic
3. Lorcin Engineering .380 semiautomatic
4. Raven Arms .25 semiautomatic
5. Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun
6. Smith and Wesson 9mm semiautomatic
7. Smith and Wesson .357 revolver
8. Bryco Arms 9mm semiautomatic
9. Bryco Arms .380 semiautomatic
10. Davis Industries .380 semiautomatic

But hey! We gotta get those dangerous weapons off the street!

Wait, you are saying that cheap shitty pistols are used in crimes, and not $1500+ "assault" rifles? Odd. Let me do some research on that!

/researches

"Even weapons misclassified as “assault weapons” (common in the former Federal
and California “assault weapons” confiscations) are used in less than 1% of all
homicides."

--FBI Uniform Crime Statistics

Well, hmmmph.

Someone kills people with a handgun and they talk about banning assault rifles?

That is almost like getting attacked by terrorists from one country and invading another that had nothing to do with it...

Sounds like a good time to stock up on magazines, AR15s and ammo. Any attempt at legislation will only make the price go higher.

People have been since...ohhh Obama got elected.

Despite the huffing nothing will come of this, especially with the new congress. So don't fret guys.

I know, it's been expensive to go shooting. Easy to blow a couple hundred dollars worth of ammo in an hour at the range.

Thats not entirely true, but the list is bullshit anyway. Ruger makes several 9mm's. Which one are they talking about?
The much of the rest of the list is vague as well, but the S&W's may or may not be cheap. I bet a lot of them are old police models from the 60's and 70's. Maybe we should be asking our nations police forces how they ended up in the hands of criminals.

Also I find it hard to believe 380's are frequently used in crimes. I have a bitch of a time getting 380 ammo unless I buy a thousand rounds from an online store. Is that what criminals are doing, or are they getting the stuff from walmart? Cuz all my local walmarts dont normally keep 380 in stock. I had to beg my nearest one and when they did they stocked really cheap russian Yula ammo. That shit jams every other round. If thats what criminals are using these days then trust me, we have nothing to fear.

Even when the Democrats held solid majorities in both houses of Congress and the presidency, there was no chance of serious firearms control legislation. There were too many Blue-dog Democrats in the House who knew that a vote for firearms control was a guarantee of early retirement. With Republican control of the House, the possibility is far more remote.

Funny how that fucker has only stimulated the economy is via ammunition and firearms. Think about it.

Thank God for the republican house. Any of these ideas is dead in the water. Thank God for republican controlled house.

Ah, maybe you should check out Obama's record on this issue??

http://www.nraila.org/obama/

FACT: Barack Obama supported a proposal to ban gun stores within 5 miles of a school or park, which would eliminate almost every gun store in America.

FACT: Barack Obama has endorsed a 500% increase in the federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition

FACT: Barack Obama opposes Right to Carry laws

You seem to me to be slightly confused?

Good to see the house taking up things that they know will pass too like the repeal of the Job killing health care government zionistecofascist unconstitutional health care death panel law...

and Darrel Issa's inquisition into Acorn...

/sidenote : wouldnt it be funny if Issa investigates the Acorn outrage and finds that it was unwarranted..
