ATOT's new "Best Things You Must Eat" segment

Let's start a list of local things you can order from anywhere that everyone needs to try. I love finding awesome local delicacies and it would be cool to share your knowledge 🙂

There's a small chocolate/ice cream factory in Findlay OH called Dietsch Brothers, and they make these absolutely FANTASTIC chocolate covered pretzels. We get a bunch of them every year for Christmas gifts, but sometimes we just crave the damn things and drive over to get them. Highly recommended!

What else you got?

TO CLARIFY: WE'RE LOOKING FOR STUFF THAT IS UNIQUE TO YOUR AREA THAT CAN BE ORDERED ONLINE. FOR INSTANCE:

Bad:
"Spaghetti is awesome!"

Good:
"Little Italy Spaghetti Sauce is AWESOME and made locally in Cleveland Ohio! http://www.shopwell.com/clevelands-own-little-italy-pasta-sauce/pasta-sauce/p/7338819610

I eat those pretzels pretty regularly and they are quite good. Actually, Dietsch has a lot of good stuff to eat.

I'll throw out a ginger soda local to the Traverse City, MI. area that I really like:

Secret Aardvark habanero hot sauce is made locally in Portland, Oregon. It's actually available via Amazon now, so I imagine you can get it anywhere, but it's fairly ubiquitous in PDX and for good reason; it's the best hot sauce I've ever had. It's got good heat, but beyond that, it's loaded with flavor. I'm actually enjoying some with breakfast while I write this. Damn good stuff.

The problem with habaneros is there's just plain hot with no flavor. Is this stuff stupid spicy, or can an average person actually eat it?

Habaneros actually have excellent flavor, but most hot sauce companies try to overwhelm the palate with heat and you end up being able to taste nothing but pain. Secret Aardvark does a great job capturing the flavor of habanero, along with complimentary flavors, while keeping the heat at a level that is still approachable for most people. I'd put it as slightly hotter than Tabasco or Tapatio, with a bit less of a vinegary taste. The average American who shies away from any heat whatsoever won't like it, but the average American also likes McDonalds, so their opinion on food is easily dismissed. If you can eat hot sauce in general, this won't be too spicy for you.

Cool thread!

For my birthday back in Feb, my GF ended up getting me a 3-month subscription for a hatchery box. Think of it as 'beer-of-the-month' club, but with different spices, sauces, rubs, etc arriving each month. When the box is delivered you have no idea what's in it. Each box comes with a brochure to describe each item, origin, price, etc. Pretty damn cool if you like to try new stuff and don't have the palette of a 9 year old.

Kentucky is mostly known for Horses and Bourbon. I've also found that beer cheese is another major local "thing. And it is delicious. Take this to a party and it's the first thing to be eaten up.

My favorite so far is Howards Creek:
