ATOT weekly Engineering & Creative Challenge - WEEK 8 - Ping-Pong Launcher & Boats

I have a few basic concept ideas for the launcher but not sure if I'll have time to do them. Just a question, can there be a "launch pod" where the ball stays with the pod and gets released at some later point during travel? Basically a part of the contraption that would be launched and the ball sits on it. I have an idea involving a small hydrogen explosion but if I just put the ball alone it will probably melt in the process. I might stick to just gas, but hydrogen is more fun to play with, cheaper, and has more of a kick to it. 😛

Instead of a pod that travels with the ball, could you use some form of wadding? I'm excited to see this hydrogen explosion.

Actually the more I think of it, I need to completly seal off the can, so I can probably just make the paper/tape have a bit of flex room and it will still make it fly. This may be tricky and I might end up doing something simpler, if I even get the time.

I need to create a vacuum so I can suck the hydrogen in. I probably wont need all that much though. I'm probably overcomplicated things, and I can just use a premade gas like propane or gasoline.

Nice vid btw, just saw you posted it.

:awe:

I got my certificate in the mail today, woot! I'll be sure not to reveal your address (is that thing still going on?).

Psssh. You can do it. Gotta want it!

Didnt get mine yet 😛

Want to write a 15 page paper on the characters of "The Sun also Rises" ? if so, by all means do it lol

I'm starting to think of a few ideas, I don't really want to do this outside or people will think I'm weird and stuff, but I might do it indoors. My basement is fairly safe given it's not finished and all concrete. I'm just going to see how hard I can hit it against a wall or something. I kind of like the torch idea as it's simple... might go with that, though I find hydrogen will be more fun to use. Just need to make it first.

Nonsense. You can shoot outside and if people look at you funny, just yell loudly, "I'M DOING SCIENCE!".

Set up your electrolysis contraption outside too. If the cops come by, just repeat that.

Haha, too bad we don't have a clock tower here. I can setup cables and rods and say I'm doing a weather experiment. :awe:
