COLD ass Michigan weather. Mostly for just slogging through parking lots and such. Just city living but all the parking lots have an inch or more of slushy, wet, cold nastiness.

My first reaction was to go find waterproof little girls boots on Amazon...:p

Really, most boots suitable slogging around in wet slushy weather are gonna be big and bulky.

Sorels are kind of big but they are waterproof and warm.

As John said leather + waterproofing works very well. I went through years of Wisconsin winters in full leather Fabiano (now marketed as Scarpa) hiking boots and sno-seal.

Magnum 6.0 WP? They're warm, six inch height, quiet soles, and an almost sneaker-like flexibility.

As long as you are looking for casual shoes go to a GOOD outdoors store. While they are going to have many hiking boots they'll have a pretty decent variety of other shoes made by the same companies that make the boots. Find somebody at the store that works specifically with shoes and have them help you pick something out.

You can talk with us all you want about what are the best shoes but people's feet are different. You'll find the best ones if you go to a place where they have a good selection with a decent staff.

If you're looking for dressy shoes that are waterproof you'll need to find an old school men's clothing store. I picked up a pair of Havana Joes 6 years ago at a store like that. They are extremely comfortable, dressy enough to wear to work with slacks and they're water proof up to the laces.

If you want some seriously good shoes be prepared to pay a decent amount. The shoes I mentioned cost me $120 for the pair but I wore them almost weekday for 4 of those 6 years I've owned them and I wasn't nice to them either. They still look good though the soles are starting to have the tread wear flat.

That's my problem...the good stores are super busy and places like track n trail are staffed by people who know less about shoes than ATOT does about women.

I know I like my Merrell shoes, maybe I'll take a trip up to their outlet.

Do you have an REI or the equivalent? There's usually at least one person there that knows shoes.

Anyways, even if the place is busy just go spend the time to get to the salesperson that knows what they're talking about.

I have some wolverines that are waterproof about halfway up.

Mine are the Durashocks. And they are OK but not great. They have relatively smooth bottoms and slide on the ice. Next time I will get some with really good treads so I dont slip.

If I were to buy another pair, it would be these:

Goretex lining, 600 grams of thinsulate. Serious business.

Also, Nick's boots makes waterproof/insulated boots as well:

They also offer pacs.

Both are top-of-the-line boots. Their leather boots are all hand-made in Spokane and can be custom fitted to your foot.

I wore Whites and Nick's for most of the 30 years I worked construction. You cannot buy better boots. They're not cheap Chinese-made boots, but you DO get what you pay for.

I would say it depends on how long you will be in the water. If you have to stand in water for a couple of hours then you want something with a Gore-tex lining or some such. (I think there are a couple of liners that guarantee no water will enter the boot (barring a puncture) no mater how long you are in the water)

If it's just for parking lots then something with a Water-proof tag is good enough. (I would stay away from Water Resistant. Oh and there is a time duration for it to be considered Water Proof. I forget what it is but some 'Water Proof' boots are more water proof than others)

When I lived in Grand Rapids 7 years ago I picked up basically this boot when I worked for Wolverine World Wide (Owners of Merrell):
http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/Pro...Men/Footwear/Filters/Mens/Thermo-6-Waterproof

Great boot that has stood up to many a Michigan winter with little maintenance. The only downside for me is that I wish I had gone with the non-insulated one as its a bit warm for my feet

Also, if you get anything with leather it's generally a good idea to treat the leather every once in a while to keep it from cracking (Mink oil/grease or some such)

dont forget 20% coupon stackable with 25% Bing!

and get a boot with a zipper along the side. lacing up a boot is a PAIN! especially if u r wearing it everyday

Merrells are exempt from all discount codes...believe me, I've tried.

The zipper sounded like a great idea, all my shoes are slipons and I'm not used to dealing with laces.

Picked up these guys for $100 even at the mall. Nice and light, waterproof, not too ugly and comfy as hell!
