eh i just got this idea from czar's "CS match" ;)

would anybody be interested? it would be in C or C++... since just about everybody knows those... maybe we could have teams and stuff. dunno, just a thought.

has this been done before?

Nerd : "I've created a program to download pr0n 1000 times faster!"
Marge : "Does anybody really need that much pr0n?"

Simpsons own :)

I'm sure all of our intellects combined could create a program to nef 1000x faster and with much more ignorance!

Or you know, we could like, do something to benefit people or something. Whatever.

That would be cool, but I only know some JAVA and a bit of perl, however I've wanted to learn C++, so this could be good. How would we keep score?

glad to see some interest :) hmm, i guess not as many people know c++ as i thought... maybe we can just make it language agnostic.

well i guess one way would be to look at time it takes to complete a task... if anybody else has exp. with programming competitions, feel free to jump in... i've never been in one :)

I participated in an online programming competition before. It works better if you have teams where the members are at a physical location.

Anyway, there are a few sites dedicated to programming contests, with problems to solve and an automatic solution checker that will test your program to see if it does what was asked. I'll see if I can dig up some links.

Hah! Well, if wanting to be set on an equal level with all of my peers, having the same access to information as them, working as a group to facilitate a singular common goal, and to receive a meager and oppressive sum of money for my hard work, then I guess I am a commie!

:)

Here is the best site out there for this, TONS of problems with all different difficulty levels. Unfortunately, it's a foreign site so the english is a little weird sometimes.

programming competitions usually have a set of 5-6 problems 2 easy, 2 medium, and 2 hard question, on a given input they should have a given output, the there is a set of secret input and secret output that judge runs through the program and checks for the correct output, you get points on speed and you get penalties for inncorrect submissions.

thanks for the info, sir frederick...

so what do you guys think? it would be kind of weird since we're not physically together.... would everybody rather just have one large project? we'd have to come up with something worthwhile, if it's gonna be a project ;)

btw, i am personally interested in the application of computing and artificial intelligence to transportation... maybe we could make a little traffic simulator? that'd be fun :p

Cool, my school is in the list!!! :D But not because of me. :(;)

It seems that we can't find a common language to pick, so doing a "team" project would be hard. Maybe we could write a program that would encode and decode messages we send each other here. We could start with something simple like writing posts with the letters backwards or something, then we could do more complicated encoding. Just a thought. :)
