It may seem absurd to nearly everyone here that anyone would fall for this, but most people here are more tech savvy than your average consumer. I can see where someone might simply overlook the "box" part or simply think it's terminology for the iBook by itself with no cables (which is the intent of the part about no cables or software).

To be fair, the government DOES do stuff like this all the time, people DO cry foul, and NOTHING happens.

like what?

Let me also add that I bet there are lots of people out there that would simply assume something like this is either illegal or not allowed on Ebay. Some people in this thread have even questioned if it was legal or allowed. So I can easily see someone less tech savvy not even considering that this could be such a scam.

His starting bid was $1. The second guy bidded $2 for it. I don't think he was trying to trick anyone. It clearly says box, and I looked at the picture... and it was REALLY obvious that it was just a box. It's really not the seller's fault that the buyer can't read.

It says it is "new".

That makes this most likely fraud. I'm sure Apple does not authorize whoever makes their boxes to sell them new on Ebay, so this box probably came with the computer in it.

If the computer is not still in it then it can't possibly be new, in fact at the point the computer was removed it has served it's purpose and is definately used.

I wasn't being a smartass either. My response is dead serious. Although few people really cry foul anymore because the government has done such a good job of tricking us.

It states in Auction "Brand NEw"

you can tell by the pic it's not new. File the claim with Paypal, "Item not as described", get the refund, case closed.

Another vote for idiot needs to learn an expensive lesson.
That's what you get for not reading the auction page.

Yes I know the auction is legal but honestly we all know the sellers intentions here. Honestly he's just a jerk. I would hope you ATers would have a little integrity and wouldn't post junk like that.

His intentions were to sell a box. Would you be mad if it went for $3.50.

No. But the buy it now price of $500 indicates that his intent was to get a lot more than $3.50 for what amounts to kindling. (And the reserve price? How much was that? More than $3.50, I'm willing to bet.)

Well, the seller can INTEND to get a million dollars if he wants to, but it takes a stupid buyer to give it to him.

buyer does not have to pay

negative feedback means very little on ebay

you're only as good as your last deal

i've left several negative feedbacks to non payers, doesnt stop them from bidding

A $500 lesson? That's a lot of money--a week's pay for many, and enough that anyone who's half sane about their money should be mightily pissed about losing because they were SCAMMED!

Don't even try to tell me that the seller who put up a reserve price auction for a worthless box with $500 buy it now price (plus $10 shipping!) had honest intentions. There's no argument that could possibly convince me that this jerk-ass seller is on the up-and-up.

BTW, I reported the seller to eBay several hours ago, just in case (though unlikely) nobody else had yet.

Ethics and Laws/Rules are not always perfectly aligned. The auction is quite clear. Is Ebay to ban the sale of cardboard boxes? The seller's intentions are quite clear, but he has done nothing against the rules. It's up to the buyer to get an education. And yes, when it comes to spending $500, I don't think it's unreasonable to do a little research before you plunk down the money.

yea, they should ban the sale of used boxes sold as new.

I wouldn't worry much about this. The seller is going to get his ARSE nailed if the buyer really wants to. I remember reading a guy on ebay who did the same thing, but it was a "picture of 42inch plasma TV". Some moron paid like 1K and got a picture of a plasma. Sure enough he went to the police and the seller got nailed even though the auction clearly said the winner would only get a picture. The seller was found guilty and got his arse served

I hate to say this, but anyone who falls for that is buying a valuable and much needed lesson in life. Let them learn a $500 lesson instead of getting killed by doing something this stupid.
