Hire a traffic lawyer. The cost and high inherent penalties are out of your scope.

At the very least, you'll save points on your record and insurance hikes using a seasoned pro to defend you.

What did you do? Donate too much money to Japan to afford a ticket? Further evidence that "no good deed never goes unpunished."

I don't understand why the attempt wasn't made to buckle some passengers hell even double them up. I imagine that would have got you a lot further than just not buckling them up. Just based on that it's a massive fail.

All you can do is show up and hope they lower the fine. They usually do but for something that high with that many counts I'd say your fucked.

Of course, it's always possible that the judge will hit him with the same fines and penalty assessment costs...plus tack on some court costs for wasting his time...as well as a license suspension.

Fuck the nanny state. Good luck OP. Fucking government has no fucking right to tell us how to go about our daily lives. We all grew up without motherfucking seatbelts and turned out just fine. Better than todays kids anyway.

I don't know CA laws or how their Courts run, (if it's anything like every other Court I've been in then each Judge runs it their way) but here's a few pointers for traffic Court.

1) Be on time or early.

2) Dress business casual, no suit, (it makes it look like you are trying to too hard to impress) and no jeans, short etc., (too lazy and have no respect for the Court).

3) Always address the Judge as "your Honor or Judge" and everyone else as "Sir or Mam" Remember your manners and be respectful. Some Judges and prosecutors will try to get you riled up, DON'T let them make you angry. Politeness is the key. Do expect a lecture designed to make you feel like a fool because children's safety was involved.

4) Without admitting guilt ask if there is a diversion program that you may be able to take. It'll still cost you money usually not as much and it doesn't get reported so no points lost.

5) Remember that what you read is the maximum penalty which is seldom given unless you have a really bad driving record.

6) Again I'm NOT familiar with CA's traffic law nor the Court you're going to be in but I wouldn't spend the money on a lawyer at this point. A lawyer will be more than happy to take your money but if you have a clean driving record you'll likely get the same deal on your own.

A few weeks ago I was pulled over because I was driving a 5 person car with 6 people in it. The 5 passengers were children between 12 and 15. None of the passengers in the back seat were able to buckle up since it was 4 in a space for 3. Today I get 4 tickets in the mail for 470 dollars each, and a notice saying I must appear before a judge. A total of $1880 due.

What can I do to get the judge to reduce the fine and points. Also looking at the DMV site, it seems the judge might be able to suspend my license for 1 year. 🙁

Pay up and stop putting kids lives in danger.

That was a ignorant thing to do in the first place putting their lives at risk....

Go to court, suck it up,beg for your ignorant life and hope you can do the classes / reduced fine and live and learn and if you do it again you should be locked up.

Think people.......:\

Take the CHP course prior to the ticket and bring the cert with you to court, show that as evidence of you "making things right" they may be more willing if they see that you realize you were in the wrong and are correcting it.

I have rear seat belts that can be pulled to the limit in order to cover two small children.
They kids may not like it, but it can be done.
Most rear belts are designed to be able to cover a 250lb adult.

It is the fact that you were lazy and did not want to go through the effort of ensuring the kids were buckled in.

You neglected in the OP to indicate the ages of the kids and why the LEO actually stopped you.

If the stop was only for the kids, I would suspect that at least one was obviously standing up where the LEO could see it rather than sitting down and behaving.

There are additional details omitted by the OP.

You've never heard of a law requiring seatbelts? Ummmm... welcome to like 1985.

OP, here's the nasty part: even if you do get the fines reduced and keep your license, in CA (since you mentioned CHP) your insurer can use tickets against you so unless you get them expunged from your record you'll be reported to DMV as having 4 tickets. When your insurance comes up for renewal you'll likely be dropped as uninsurable for having 4 moving violations in a short timespan. You'll then have to get insurance through CA's shared-risk pool which will cost 4 fingers, 2 toes, and your left nut.

Seatbelts aren't usually required in the back seat, and the OP made it sound like the law he broke was for having too many people in the car.

You post on ATOT, therefore you are an ATOT Millionaire with supermodels (that don't have pointy elbows) hanging off each arm. $1880 is nothing to you. Pay the fine and move on, or better yet buy off the judge if he's not already on your payroll.
