It's pretty damn scary. I know south of me towards braidwood and coal city (further east of where these storms happened) the ground is not really suitable for full basements. So I hope out west where this happened they do have basements otherwise it's awfully hard to survive something like that. There are pictures of straw driving inches deep into trees from tornados.

I still remember the Plainfield tornado that happened back when I was 5 years old. That storm blew directly over my house before making touchdown 15 miles east and leveling the entire town of Plainfield.

Yeah, most homes around here have basements. There was one reported death. If there's any silver lining to this it happened during the day and not at night when people were sleeping. The weather where I am (25 minutes west) was crazy. 60+ MPH winds. Hail. Walls of rain. Ect. I had water coming into places in my home (windows and doors) that I've never had water in before.

I live about 25 minutes from Washington, IL. There were 100's of homes completely destroyed there. It looks like a nuclear bomb went off. Nothing left but foundations and slabs. My wife and I have lots of coworkers and friends that have no homes left.

:(

I saw the pictures of that yesterday, both of the damage and the tornado itself. Very wild stuff. The fact that it happened in mid-late November makes it even more crazy.

That must have been a huge front. Grand Rapids is what...a couple hundred miles north? And we got hammered pretty much all night. Nothing like you guys got as far as damage but there are all kinds trees and limbs down, flooding, mobile homes got smashed, really nasty stuff. I don't remember a thunderstorm lasting that long this time of year ever before.

Praying for you guys down there.

Well this escalated quickly. It was like +14C last night, which is unreal for November, and now this:

It's not much as far as the snow goes, but wow those winds are crazy!

Some more pictures from the carnage yesterday:

Rated as F4. This didn't hit your typical trailer park. These were all $300K+ type homes. High end neighborhood. Good friend of mine from high school has nothing left but a driveway and the hardwood flooring on the subfloor above his basement.

Still crazy to me that this much destruction and only one death and less than 30 other reported injuries.

They are reporting debris from this thing over 100 miles away. There are street signs from Washington showing up 30 miles and smaller things like pieces of mail being 100 miles away.

It's getting pretty close to "stay the fuck in bed" weather around here. Only good news is I won't have to touch the lawn mower for a few months.

That is crazy just one person died in that. A good kind of crazy though.

in the midwest, our houses are built to take pretty severe weather. Its uncommon for houses to not have basements as well. If these were quarter million dollar homes, my guess is they were pretty well built even for midwest standards.

I am very sorry for all the destruction but very grateful this didn't hit a place that wasn't as well suited.

Basements + awareness were the only thing that saved lives. Look at the pictures. There were hundreds of homes that are literally nothing but splintered lumber and debris. If you were above ground you would have been dead.

If this had happened at night and people were sleeping/not as preparred it would have been a very different story.

Makes you wonder how some houses were left unscathed. And just a few feet away total devastation. :\

That actually happens a lot in tornadoes, as they jump around and don't sit on the ground the entire time. When I was 4 or 5, we had a tornado jump over our block and the next when I lived in Texas. It was total devastation around us, but our block was untouched.

A lot of place have tornado sirens that sound when one is spotted, but I don't think IL has them (at least, I've never heard any).

-17C, feels like -28.

Overnight it's going down to -21 and feels like -30.

I can live with that. Sure beats the rain/wet/crappy depressing weather we've been having. This is what November is suppose to be, so I'm just used to it. Though, I did run out of pepsi, and don't really feel like going out there to get more. :p Mini blizzard going on. Nothing all that bad though. I'll probably end up going later tonight, we have a 24h grocery store, which is super nice.

lol I felt the same way complaining about rain a while ago too. The rain is over now, and we have our standard winter weather and I'm happy, meanwhile some people are still with no house and no place to stay and lost everything. :(
