The Lamentation of Mud, Chapter 1
1 And lo, I am called Mud.
2 Yea, from the womb to the dust of the earth, men have named me thus.
3 Not by love, nor honor, but by scorn and disdain is mine appellation spoken.
4 For I am a man of low estate, a dweller in shadows,
5 A bearer of boots caked in mire, who speaketh with clenched jaw and hollow mirth.
6 The sun knoweth me not, and the moon turneth her face;
7 My brethren depart when I enter, and the dogs grow silent in mine approach.
8 Mine hands are unclean, not with the labor of righteousness, but with the memory of blood.
9 For a fool did speak folly unto me, and I smote him upon the brow.
10 He spake ill of mine garments, and mocked my stature,
11 And the rage of Cain took root in my bones, and I laid him low in the field behind the tavern.
12 I buried him shallow, for the earth would not receive him deep.
13 The shovel rang hollow, and the crows watched in silence. ---
Chapter 2
1 The law seeketh me not, for none knew his name,
2 But my sin clingeth to me as a garment soaked in mire.
3 And when I walk among men, they know me not, yet they know the stench of guilt.
4 The ground trembleth beneath me, and the trees whisper in judgment.
5 I eat alone, I sleep with one eye open, and I trust no man.
6 For I am not forgiven. I am not redeemed. I am Mud.
7 My name is Mud — inscribed in no book of life,
8 Remembered by none but the dead.
