Just remembered I have this super old IP camera that I was not using for anything. Managed to set it up real quick to monitor the wood stove. The interface uses Java which is a pita to get to work in Linux but I found that if I go directly to the stream URL I can actually view the stream directly in a web browser without using the java part of the web interface. It even works on my phone, no special app or plugin needed.

I'll setup something more permanent eventually and I do eventually want security cameras around the house so I'll just tie this in to the same system, but for now it works decently so I can check up on if I need to go adjust the damper or add wood.

i won my most recent battle with the ISP. They let my modem connect and it showed up in windows as "connected" but either it was throttled back to zero or traffic on the connection was otherwise blocked. A complaint to the BPU (board of public utilities) got that fixed in less than 24 hours.

Now I'll admit I've been something of a dick but that'sonly because they're such assholes. Fortunately, the state BPU has their ass on a short leash.

I can't prove it but I'm pretty sure the problem was manufactured since I've never seen a modem say it was connected but no able to pass any traffic either way.

The stooge that they had working on the problem kept phrasing it as if it were a connectivity issue, but I made it very clear in my complaint that the modem was always connected - it was just throttled back to zero or otherwise blocking any attempt to communicate over the connection.

It's these little victories that make my day. It's really too bad that my town doesn't permit Verizon to install Fios, otherwise I'd drop them faster than full, stinky diaper.

Has anyone else noticed that all of the major hurricanes so far this season have all make landfall along the gulf coast?

The normal pattern is to have winds blowing off of the Sahara and seeding the water ladened atmosphere with microscopic dust. These patterns then create the storms that tend to make landfall on the east coast.

But this seems to be the new pattern. I assume it has something to do with a weakened gulf stream (AMOC) goin up the east coast. Plus, the water in the gulf is a lot warmer than anything on the Atlantic side.

My area should get some rain from the system which is mostly welcome since Sept has been extremely dry so far.

Jersey Mike's sub shop has bee advertising a lot. So I finally decided to go to one but it had already shut down.

Fortunately there's an independent sub shop the next town over that's been in business since the 60s. I'd forgotten how much I loved those things. With shredded lettuce, onion, tomato oil and vinegar it's like a salad on a bun

Being disconnected the past few weeks made me realize just how much I use the internet and what a pain in the ass it is when I can't get online.

I got my vote by mail form a couple of days ago. I just have to make sure that I fill it out and return it before I lose it.

I've been rewatching old Archer episodes. Some are truly classic.

Another channel is airing old SG1 episodes but I don't know if I can keep up since they ply 3 or 4 at a time.

Got frozen flounder for the kitties. The kibble I feed them is very high quality (supposedly) but they still love the raw stuff.
