I do my own brakes. When I learned how to repair the brakes, I was taught to have the rotors resurfaced. But even though I buy OEM Toyota rotors, they'll just warp again quickly after having them turned. The recommendation today is to just buy new rotors.

@bigboxes Grats dude. Is that something they would tell young mechs at the votech? Don't really see why they would except it make a great 'well, when I was your age before everything turned to shit . . . . ' story.

I'm 56. But I keep on learning. Even if you are able to turn the rotor and it's within spec, like @sdifox said, the rotors will be too thin to dissipate heat and warp fairly quickly. You'll end up with excessive vibration and poor braking and have to purchase new rotors and pads anyways. You're best bet is to ask around and find someone who'll replace your pads and rotors for you. You don't need a shop for this repair. Brake shops are notorious for overcharging and overselling. Eff that. Just get four new rotors and some Akebono pads. Akebono brake pads are ceramic and are long wearing, quiet and they won't tear up your rotors. I've got a coworker who says he knows someone who'll do it for $20 per axle. That's $40 to install all four brake rotors and pads. I'm sure you can find someone where you live. Just ask your friends, family and neighbors if they know someone they trust.

@bigboxes This probably isn't going to make a lot of sense . . . the ratio of USD to giant sucking lampreys that will even suck the quantum vaccuum out of you, has gotten to the point where $550 to get rid of some adolescent trees was more than worth it. Let's forget that I have 2 std chainsaws and few more of the pocket variety.

if you're going to do a brake job yourself, make sure you do some research if you've never done them on your car before. there are a glorious amount of videos on the you of tubes with mechanics and mechanically inclined individuals that will show and tell you what you will possibly need to complete the brake job, and hopefully without breaking your wallet into tiny pieces.

I've been doing my own breaks for 30 years. Yes, having YouTube videos to see what tools and techniques you need to understand for your vehicle is invaluable. I usually keep my car for a while so I just have to learn the first time. It's good to know if you're going to need a special tool to push in the caliper piston. Also, should replace replace the guides and lubricate the guides and where the pads seat into the guides. I almost want to do my brakes just so I can use my new power ratchet. I need help. 😂
