Updated bios, I'll see what happens tomorrow. It actually locked up early last night it was like 9pm or so. So it really seems to only do it when there's no activity but seems the network still works when it locks up since I was able to ping it all night. All power management related settings are off.

Going to SSH in from work and see if anything weird shows up on the console at some point. Maybe SSH will actually still work.

It's wild having all this free time. Wish my wife was here to enjoy it with me. I'm actually working on projects that I have put off a long time due to time constraints. I'm staying up late. Sleeping in late. The thing is, I'm not watching all those movies and tv shows like I thought I would.

I seriously have an aura of bad luck when it comes to computers. I get to work today, start logging in to all my stuff and I'm about half way through and bam. Black screen on the first monitor, the other 3 monitors stay on but are unresponsive. No cursor, nothing. Then the whole PC reboots. Did that several times in a row. I open the PC to look for any failed fans or something and the fan on the primary video card died and it's hot enough to fry an egg on it. Did not figure a 512MB card could get that hot lol. At least it was an easy fix, these issues don't tend to be that simple.

Swapped it out with a coworker's PC who is gone on long term stress leave (poor guy we've been cannibalizing his desk and PC one part at at a time lol)

Now if only my home PC was this simple, but I don't exactly have a spare PC to start cannibalizing stuff from. Really hoping the bios update fixes that one.

I have a bad feeling the video card might be the issue, and that's going to suck because it's brand new and is the key to getting my 2 4k monitors going because it has the 2 HDMI ports I need.

Also lost fibre up north while all of this was going on but my coworker took care of that while I was dealing with my PC, he stayed an extra hour. Probably the ice road shifting again, I don't know why they run the fibre through there instead of running it beside it.

It's weird for me as I don't really have that much more spare time, but since I work shifts I do get spare time in general so everything kind of feels status quo. Except at work it feels weird when I'm in the office since it feels like a weekend shift being alone in the building.

Have to admit it's kinda nice though. :D

I'm on furlough from work. It's been 2 1/2 weeks now. Going stir crazy. But I took two road trips so far. Thinking about going somewhere this week as well. I still want to make sure I'm working on something each day. Just can't be 100% leisure. Plus, with no sports on I really have no excuse.

Yeah I think keeping busy is key. Couple years ago I went through a depression and it was due to just falling complacent with doing nothing on my days off. I have not been doing as much as I want to do on my days off, but still been keeping busy enough that I feel at at least semi accomplished. Next stretch of time off is going to be like 5 days, so hoping I can figure out my PC issues by then and move on to something else. I wanted to drywall my crawlspace but my PC took precedence. So hopefully I'll get to do that this time. Really hoping the bios update stops the lockups.

Well that sucks. Bios update didn't work for home machine. I loaded a SSH session as well as a local terminal via X11 from work just to see if it's the X11/wayland part that's locking up or the whole system. Really looks like it's the whole system. Really don't know what to do anymore, I really can't throw more money at this stupid thing. I just want dual 4k monitors I don't know why it has to be so hard. I might have to just give in and go back to the old machine with single monitor and use the other 4k for something else and return the GPU.

So, I'm using my hard drive dock to backup data and then copy it to the server. I had been getting better transfer speeds via the dock and USB 3.0 than I was with my new NVMe drive in the USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure. I wonder what the issue is. I will troubleshoot it later. Got to finish with the data backup first. It says an hour. Time to do something else.

What's the GPU? Could it be defective? Maybe try another make? Is Linux the problem? (I'm sure you've thought of all these things)

It's a brand new GPU so I hope it's not that... but I might have to try the old GPU to at least rule it out. This motherboard is weird in that the built on video does not actually work without an APU, as opposed to a CPU, it's not really a true built on video, it's more like it just has an output and that's it. so I can't test it without a GPU.

So, things were working beautifully and then you added a GPU. Now, things are not stable. Seems to me that you should try another card or at least a replacement before giving up and moving on to another solution. Just because a GPU is new doesn't mean it's not the issue. Then there's driver issues for Linux. Have you contacted (GPU maker) for support? Or try another make of GPU that has better support for Linux?

New OS, new motherborad and new CPU too. The old motherborad hates GPUs (it does weird things at POST if there is a GPU) and I needed a GPU with 2 HDMI out for the 4k screens. Upgrading that much hardware at once the OS would not boot and I was due to upgrade anyway so installed a newer OS.

So this is basically a whole new machine. The hardware itself worked fine as it was my mining rig.

AMD GPUs have the best support for Linux, Nvidia has tons of issues so I rather not go that route. (already been through that hell before)

I'm thinking I might just forget this whole dual monitor thing. Go to single 4k and go back to the original motherboard that does not like GPUs and just use onboard video. Going to have to reinstall the OS again but I'm probably heading that way no matter what since this current setup is trash and needs to be changed either way.

From what I'm finding on Google, Linux does not play well with Ryzen and that's not going to get fixed any time soon since the posts I'm finding are from 2017. People are reporting same as me, random freezes. So probably end up going back to the Intel board which can't work with a GPU, so that means back to single monitor. Could buy another Intel board but I'm really am done with spending money on this. I shouldn't have even done this in first place I have over 12k on the credit line.

I'm really regretting this whole upgrade it just caused more grief than anything and starting to affect my mental health. I almost want to see if I can just return everything but I'm probably past the grace period by now.

Other option is to say fuck it and just go to Windows 10. At least there is guaranteed hardware support without it being a gamble or running into so many weird stupid issues. I just can't stand the look and user experience of Windows 10 though, it's just such a horrible UI and the OS as a whole is a terrible user experience. Stuff like Classic Shell only go so far.
