My last few builds were Supermicro but I'm kinda leaning towards going back to whitebox builds TBH. An AMD Threadripper based system would make a skookum VM server. With whitebox stuff the max ram is typically 64GB mind you, but that's why I would build two for redundancy and more resources. 😀

Lose out on redundant PSU by going whitebox, but honestly how often do PSUs fail. Redundant PSU is good if you have redundant power sources mind you and I sort of do but even so, the odds of my UPS failing is slim enough it's a risk I'm willing to take especially if I have multiple hosts and spread them on different inverters. Eventually want to upgrade my power plant to use two beefy inverters running off a 48v battery plant. One inverter per PDU and just spread stuff to both.

I've kind of refrained from spending too much money on my server room in the past years though. Have other projects I want to do like the garage, and a deck. Also want to look at buying a property to setup a camp, but eventually live off grid at.

That shipping though. That's why I never buy server stuff off Ebay.

I've seen worse than that though. When I was looking at UPSes it was comical. $600 to ship a $200 UPS. I can practically buy the same one new and have it shipped free.

I can ship it to nyc and have my friend drive it over... that is how I got my PE R710

I pulled one of the PSUs. In case one dies 😛

Oh yeah helps if you can arrange for someone to drive it over from states. Ridiculous how we get screwed so bad on that though. It's not like there's a wall and they have to fight white walkers on their way.

Pretty sure I told you I bough a 2006 MB E350 4matic in Dec 2008 and drove it back from Peoria, IL.

That made me think.. there should be some kind of service for that. I don't know anyone in the states and don't plan to go there, but it would be cool if Ebay or some 3rd party offered a service where you basically have stuff shipped to a depot, and then they drive it across the border then ship it to you at the nearest post office. Even if it cost like $20 it would still be cheaper than $100+ that is typically asked for bigger items. They would take multiple orders in batches then drive them in a cube van.

I guess border patrol would not like that though... probably illegal.

There are limits on how much you can bring in tax free.

Freaking hilarious. Only Apple would be able to sell a stand for a grand. And that's American. So it's more like $1,400 or so.

Worse part is, people are freaking going to buy it. Because Apple fans are sheep.

American? Don't blame me. I have a $100 Ergotronic monitor arm. $1K for a stand is a joke. I suppose sheeple will buy it.

Ergotronic arms are pretty good and worth their money. Some can be kind of pricey in the $300 range. Not sure how the cheaper alternatives compare. When I build my new desk I want to put the monitor on an arm too so it's completely off the desk, debating on keeping the triple monitor setup or going with a single 4k. I do want to go 4k no matter what but might still keep the 1k side monitors as I could just keep them to leave up things that more or less just stay up all the time. That's basically what I use them for now. They have their own Raspberry Pis. A true triple monitor setup was driving me nuts since stuff opens on whatever monitor it feels like. It's even worse at work with 3 4ks and 1 1k. But at least once our stuff is open we don't really need to touch it after that.

I recently bought a floor stand for my 32" monitor. It was $114. Height adjustable. Pivot up/down.

Wow the day is going by too fast, I did hardly nothing even though I got up early. Getting ready to go check out a property, about an hour from here, should be back in time to go visit my parents for camp fire.
