I don't disagree too much about things with you but this is one of them. Windows 10 and Office 2016 are fantastic products. Super stable, relatively light weight (runs decently even on an atom quad core + 1GB ram + eMMC tablet) OS. Office boots faster than it ever did and you won't run into some poorly made open source applications. I used to be anti-MS until Windows 7. I came to like 8 and 10 is even better. We definitely need Linux and open source applications to keep things in check but at this moment MS is up against a wall from all sides, finally being forced to make decent products.
 
Win 7 is good but 8 and 10 are terrible. the UI is terrible, the usability is terrible, not to mention it's basically a trojan given all the spying crap going on so they can sell your info to advertisers. And they really seem to want to treat it more as a service than something you own, and keep pushing cloud crap. They even want your login to be in the cloud. (for now at least you can bypass that, but for how long) Hate that crap. I won't let windows 8 or 10 on my network at all. Even windows 7 I disabled updates when they started to force people to 10. Only thing I use windows for is gaming so really I treat that machine more like a console than anything, I don't use it for day to day stuff. Well right now it's tied up to mine ethereum and running Linux until I build my dedicated machine. 😛

I absolutely hate the direction MS took, so that's one of the main reasons I jumped ship.

It still requires to manage a windows install. Antivirus, etc. I do have a win7 vm I use for certain things like accessing my ESXi server but I eventually want to dump that when I switch my VM solution to something open source. ESXi was just easier to setup for the time being.
 
For certain things you just need a dedicated machine though, like games. The only game I can successfully run in a VM is Ultima Online. The other games won't even load. Even if they did I don't imagine the performance would be that great due to the overhead.

I will probably hook up my gaming machine to the TV eventually though. I just need to figure out a proper physical setup for the keyboard and mouse so I can comfortably play off the couch.

Why would you need av for a vm? Just do it from pfsense level

Inter vlan comm won't even see pfsense. Not sure how that would help. Though I could put it on another vlan but then I have to punch a hole in the firewall to allow file shares to that other vlan, rather not do that.

Easier to try to eliminate the source of threat completely, by removing the need for windows altogether. Or at very least not having it running all the time. I only fire up the windows vm if I absolutely need to use a windows program like the ESX panel, but it's kinda cubersome, would rather not need to do that at all, so I stick to open source as much as I can.

Whether it's a VM or a physical machine, it's still an OS installation that requires the same level of management.

What Ryzen processor did you go with? Funny how that Tt power supply markets a Japanese "main" capacitor. Should have the whole thing capped with the quality parts. I was wondering what that blue thing was in the box, but I remembered that you want to mine. Nevermind, I see you have the 1300X.

Why? You're an average looking dude that has a good job and a house. You should try at least. Maybe they weren't so hot on you in grade school but older women are looking for stability and nice guys. They've been screwed over by the bad boy that does nothing but live at mom's and play Xbox all day. At this point you're being alone is a choice made from mostly crap floating in your own head.
