Starting night shifts nef

Tonight I'll be the first to take on a new NOC that we took over. We got very basic training, should be interesting... won't know what to do with any of the phone calls I get lol.
 
UPS batteries gave up the ghost today. Been tempermental this last week. I knew I had to replace them soon. Didn't make it before I had a chance to get new ones. RIP UPS batteries. 🙁

I've toyed with the idea of lithium ion for UPS or solar power, but not sure if I'd feel comfortable having those in my house. Even "professional" devices blow up a lot. If they have problems, then something I build myself is probably even more at risk than something that's gone through tons of R&D, ULC, CSA, ETL etc.

The nice thing with lead acid is you can just float them indefinitely and don't need to worry too much about regulating how much voltage they get.
 
I have my main rig, router and monitor hooked up to a cheap power strip. I hate doing that. So, I'll just roll the dice for a few more weeks. My wife has some Amazon bucks she's applied for. That makes the batteries free for boxes. I replaced my wife's batteries in her APC unit a year ago. Need to check when I bought the file server's UPS to estimate how long it has.
 
Ok, I looked it up. The batteries for the main rig UPS lasted 5.75 years. Not too shabby. I would expect to replace them any time after three years. The batteries for the file server UPS are sitting at 3.75 years. Wonder if they will go for two more years. How often do you guys replace your UPS batteries?
 
Speaking of UPS batteries I should probably check the ones in all my standalone UPSes. A lot of time they start to leak and you only realize after the fact and it's a big mess by then. I find they tend to last me 3-5 years give or take. Their capacity may slowly die but for the stand alone UPSes I mostly just care about getting through short power outages that are no more than a few minutes. At that point I start shutting stuff down.

For my servers I have about 4 hours of run time, the oldest batteries are from about 2013. I had one die on me recently though, it just started to go into thermal run away. Since it's a 12v system using 12v batteries I don't have a midpoint alarm setup, so I kinda got lucky that I caught it. Was due for maintenance and that's when I noticed how hot it was. I could have put water in the cells and it probably would have been ok, but did not want to chance it. All cells were empty except one. I presume that cell was shorted internally and it caused the other cells to get too much voltage but I never troubleshooted that far, so who knows.
