Solar in Timmins is where the word sanguine can be used in a sentence. As a totally side note, I was researching on solar today, it seems for about 20k I could do a half decent system. I did not run any numbers so not sure if the battery bank is big enough but at 1000ah I think it is. (2 strings of 500ah) Chances are I would throw in two more strings, I would just monitor voltages for a year to see how well I do with just two.
Also it seems very hard to find DC disconnects past 100a. I was hoping to put a disconnect for each battery string, but I may need to go DIY route for that one. Idealy I want the disconnect to be rated for the entire amperage of the system, even though it would balance out. I want to be able to run on one string if I have to.
I read a lot off stuff saying you should not parallel more than 2 strings... maybe the way they were showing it, but pretty sure I'd be fine if I just have a big bus bar. This is all long term thinking anyway, I don't have 20k to spend on this any time soon.
never been further south than Seattle in the states, unless you count HawaiiAnytime, if you're near Clearwater.

Sanguine = Ridiculous optimism. Not sure what that word means but I'm guessing you're saying it's not viable. It probably is not for the whole house but I'd probably just do the server room and misc circuits around the house. Would work for at least half the year. The other half the days are too short. I'd probably look into wind as well, but really need a bigger property for that. Would be a lot of work in winter though as I'd have to take the snow off every morning. Probably find a way to automate that with some kind of rotating brush system that runs hourly. Could have a laser that goes across the panels to a photocell, and when it is impeded for over an hour it would run the brushes. If you keep up with it as the snow is falling it would not be as bad as trying to take off a couple feet in one shot.
