You aren't missing out on TOO much right now, especially since it's only V0.8, a pre-alpha client.

About the only thing you CAN do is fly around and shoot some ships as they come in waves. Fun and such, but not really a solid game to sit down and play for hours and hours.

Seeing how good this pre-alpha is though, makes me very excited for everything else star citizen will bring as it becomes more fleshed out.
