I don't even know what ball size means.

its a BGA chip. So instead of pins, it has nubs. There are no slots for the nubs to go into, they sit on pads. The nubs attach to the pads via solder balls. The solder balls are very small and getting the size right is crucial.

I'd think you're right about them having a standard size, it would make the most sense (though that has not stopped people in the past).
