TF2!

Went on a 13-2 killing spree as a sniper with the huntsman. After then taking another 4 deaths, changed to soldier, because my team had zero defense. Our three engineers are somewhere, I have no idea where, I looked, and couldn't find them.

Things got better. We got their intel in our sewer. We killed all its guards. And then one of our guy's picked it up, and ran it back into the red team base, with half our team screaming at him. Red team of course let him walk right back in, and killed him deep in their base. No votekick available.

At that point, it was basically useless. I went soldier, and racked up another 20 kills and 4 deaths. Of my 10 total deaths, ZERO came from outside our base - I never even left the base. I spent my whole time, 33 kills worth, killing intruders. They came up through the grate, from the sewer, through the front, over the battlements... absolutely everywhere. Zero defense at all.

I distinctly recall watching my rocket fly through an enemy soldier, who returned fire and killed me. I respawned, and as I was starting to move again, the door of my spawn room was opened by my own team, and the same soldier's crit rocket screamed through and killed me. Next respawn dropped me through a hatch on top of a heavy.

So I told the team they were all fucking worthless and left.
It is fucking unrealistic. Playing as a american I keep on firing missiles at the british troops and they don't wanna die.

I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and just upgrade my server since I have about $340 in Amazon rewards right now.

go for more memory :sneaky:

Can't upgrade the existing server any further. If I decide to upgrade, I'd be going to 32 GB. Looking at prices, I think it will be a little more than I want to spend to do an upgrade. To accommodate my existing drives, I'd need 8 SATA ports. That puts me into X79 territory, so that would be roughly $300 for the board, $260 for the RAM, and $600 for the CPU. That's just too much money right now unless I sacrifice the number of SATA ports and drop the number of drives down to 3 or 4, but then I'd have to buy more drives.

I'd need at least 2 TB drives if I dropped the number down and buying 3 or 4 of those pretty much cancels out the advantage of dropping down to Z68 or P67 from X79.

Other option is to find a P45 board because I believe they supported 16 GB of RAM and I can just go that route instead. SATA ports are still a concern, though.

just add a sata card?

Probably not an option, but I need to check it out. Existing server has 8 ports:

2 Gigabyte ports -- mirrored OS drives
6 Intel ports -- RAID5 array

Now ideally, I'd like to do RAID6 if I go to larger drives. So if I could find a 6 port SATA card which supports RAID6 and isn't hundreds of dollars, that might be worth it. The second piece to worry about is ESX compatibility. The new box has to have components on the VMWare HCL. That probably rules out el cheapo SATA cards.

You could try this:
Find more expensive cards that are ESX compatible then find the cheaper cards with the same chipset. Should work.

I've got to gauge my commitment going forward as well. There really is no need for a new server if I keep my existing environment and don't want to expand. I've got a Sharepoint dev environment and domain controllers running on my server now and could even move some to my workstation.

I'd only upgrade if I were serious about bringing my email server back in-house and stuff like that.
